What do the non religious wear on in court?

At dinner last night my son asked “do people really have to swear on the Bible in court” I told him I’ve never been but I believe that yes you swear to tell the truth and generally they place their hand on a bible. Then he said “so what would I swear on Harry Potter and the prisoner of azkaban or something?” Then my 11 year old pipes up and says “I’d swear in my Pokémon field guide! Or a picture of the TARDIS” sometimes i wonder if other families have conversations like this around their dinner table... at least it wasn’t like last week when my oldest was discussing the mating habits of sea slugs...

No, only time you swear on a bible anymore is when you are taking office.

Why do people swear on a bible when the bible says not to swear an oath?

A person can swear on anything he wants.  It doesn't have to be a Bible.

You do not have to swear on a bible to take office either.

Thankfully that didn't happen when I've gone to court. Separation of Church and State is important. As a non religious person it would be weird to swear on a book I have no faith in. I did raise my hand and swear to tell the truth though. And yes, conversations with kids can be interesting and hilarious!

That’s a good question.

They don't they state a affirmation that they will tell the truth.  At least here in Ontario.  They can also bring in their own religious book(not sure what other word to use here) to use if they want.

Interesting, I’ve never had to go to court for anything so I’m really just familiar with how tv and movies show it when someone testifies. Apparently my son considers Harry Potter a religious book that he would swear on lol!
