What does your hand mean?

Imagine you’re walking into the grocery store. As you’re crossing through the parking lot, heading toward the door a vehicle slowly approaches, coming to a stop for you to cross in front of it.

You raise your hand instinctually.

Is your hand signifying a friendly, “Thanks for letting me go”, or is your hand signifying “Stop!” (As in, it’s my turn, you wait).

Well if the car is stop than it's a friendly thank you wave...

I don't raise my hand. I tend to keep them in my pockets.

Do you give a nod or friendly smile?

Yes. usually a nod. Sometimes a awkward half assed smile. Always direct eye contact.

Yep. So if I were in Billings, Montana, it might be different. I should add, people get hit all the time so I am on the defense I suppose.  But I will do it nicely and not with some shitty face.

I’m sure it would. I had someone give me the “Stop” hand recently and I was mildly annoyed. Pretty sure I wasn’t planning on running her over.
