Recent situation of a friend.

Place closes at 10pm.

Party of 5 walks in at 953 to dine in.
Guests are seated. Guests order, food comes out about 1020.

At 1045 a guest asks to place a Togo order. Guest is informed that the kitchen is closed, and the cook has left. Friend does not know how to turn on the fryer or light the pilot to turn on the gas grill to prepare the Togo order. Guest is irritated and the next day contact the owner. He feels It Was rude of the cook to close the kitchen and leave while guests were still in the building. Owner doesn't discipline my friend or cook but does implement a new rule that the kitchen can not be closed while there are guests in the building. Even if they stay till 1130 or later ( it has occasionally happened)

Honestly, it's my opinion that it's a dickish move to show up at a restaurant with a party of five and 8 minutes to closing, and expect to be served at all.

They both were. That was so rude of the customer, yet he was the customer. Kwim.

The cook should stay, but I get why he left.

We're the guests informed that the kitchen was closing? That would have been a good idea.

The guest was wrong. The guests should have requested the to go order when they sat down.

They were both wrong.  There should be a last seating time implemented, so that people don't walk in 5-minutes to closing and expect kitchen staff stay late just for them.  Forcing them to work later is inconsiderate.  Guest with the to-go order should have placed it when he placed his eat-in order, and should have been more considerate of the staff.

The guests were rude and in the wrong.  However, they should have been informed the kitchen was closing so they could place any further orders.
