I posted something similar in another group and it was suggested I bring it here. Which I think is a great idea and have no idea why I didn't think of it.
So here is my issue:
DD (10.5) is a very intelligent kid. She also has some very amazing qualities, but my reasoning behind this post is to address some 'negitive' qualities that she struggles with. Qualities that can be very strong positive qualities...IF they were guided in the right direction. Now I've spent the last 10.5 yrs attempting to guide them and while I wouldn't say I've failed, I would say I have done all I can do w/ the developmental psychology and early elem skills I have. So I am considering 'religion'. More so spirituality. Now, we are a rather non religious household. I was born and raised Catholic and have a vast understanding of Christianity and other high profile religions. Dh is an Atheists and always has been. We celebrate Christian holidays, but not the Christian values behind them. The kids are very familiar w/ Christianity (Catholicism as well as Baptists) and DD for one has no interest in it (nor do we). All in all we are not fans of religion. Spirituality on the other hand, I would consider myself spiritual.
Now that we have a little background here are my thoughts. DD needs something that will help ground her, give her a sense of personal responsibility/accountability, as well as something that can help channel her 'over' emotional nature. She feels 'to hard' and acts on emotions w/o thinking. On top of that she is very strong willed. This leads to ALL of our issues w/her. I have worked hard not to break her spirit and have no desire to do so, I've also worked hard on teaching her how to handle her emotions. BUT conventional methods have not really worked (shown the amount of success I was hoping for by now). So I decided to turn to spirituality. I do believe that spirituality is necessary for some people. And I think it would really benefit DD. But as I've mentioned earlier I am only really familiar w/ high profile religions and have no interest in religions that focus on 'Gods plan'. I want something that will help her w/ her personal struggles, something that will give her a strong sense of individual responsibility/accountability as well as channels her emotional energy. While I'm sure it can be argued that any religion could do this, I am only (at this point) interested in earthy religions (for a number of reasons that simply are not easy to articulate). So I came in here for input on earthy religions.
So far I have done basic research on the following:
Paganism (we are attending a couple of festivals this summer)
Wicca (attending a summer festival).
Buddhism
Native American religion (this is vast and I haven't gotten very far)
and Voodoo (not demystifying voodoo)
Any other suggestions would be wonderful, as well as any input on what I have listed.
Thanks in advance
As a pagan you definitely work on yourself and your energies and how to work with those energies and the ones around you. You become more in touch with yourself and all energies, personal and universal. As a pagan you have the three fold law, basically karma, what you do will come back to three fold. So responsiblity for your actions, no matter what they are is huge.
I'm not sure how much you have studied it, its fairly vast in material, but I would suggest looking up some grounding and centering meditations and some meditations period. Also there is a group on here called Cross Roads. Its got a ton of info on paganism/wicca. You can be a pagan without being wiccan... but you cant be a wiccan without being pagan. At least thats what I have been told and believe to be true myself.
Yes, FOCUS...focus is another issue. But I suppose that stems from the over emotional thing. You really can't focus on anything when there is a tornado of feelings going on inside...IDK....that's the way it seems anyway. What you have describes sounds very much like our 'issues' and what I was hoping an Earthy religion could do for her.
I really haven't 'studied' anything other than mainstream religions (and the extent of that study was a about 1/2 a dozen courses). I have researched a bit on line and taken a few books out at the library. I also found some festivals that I have on our calendar that we will be attending. I appreciate the info and the group suggestion. I will definitely be checking it out.

I am pagan and I am also a lot like your daughter. It's taken me many years to ground myself and sometimes I do still act out emotionally. I use a grounding and centering meditation on a daily basis that really help me focus my self and I dont flip out as much. I am a very stubborn and hard headed person as well, with a temper so grounding/centering myself helps me a lot.

You should consider taking her to a Unitarian Universalist church. Many different religions go there and even Atheists. They have a sense of spirituality that is explored through all religions. http://www.uua.org/
Also, check out a book called Nurturing Spirituality in Children http://www.amazon.com/Nurturing-Spirituality-Children-Hands-On-Activities/dp/1885223234
And my dd is 4 yrs old and I am noticing parallels in what you are saying about your dd and mine.
thanks for the info.

IDK, I'll look into it. I'm really not looking for a church though. I'm not going to rule it out until I know what it is, but for the most part I'm not looking for a church. More so ummm....spiritual guidance. Which I'm sure will included church like meetings. I guess the word church just sits the wrong way...if that makes sense. But thank you, I will definitely take a look before that church word works to deep into my head ;) .

Do you have a Unitarian church in your area? I have found them to be very intellectual and inclusive of all beliefs from Catholicism to paganism. Might be worth investigating.
