SO: NY to Ban Oversize Soda

It seems to be consensus that it's a silly waste of resources to bother to ban large serving sizes of soda/pop/flavoured carbonated sugar water...

I wondered: do you drink it? Do you buy giant sizes? Or does this really not affect you at all? (apart from most of us not being anywhere near NY, I mean!)

Why does the government think they need to regulate our food/drink portions? We should be doing it ourselves, and for our children. Governments have bigger problems to deal with.

i hardly drink soda. people know it's unhealthy and they do it anyways. banning the larger sizes isn't going to stop them I bet

That's what we do. I find the "large" is still overly large, and they offer free refills.  I get a small cup for water, too. NYC just likes to ban stuff.

Quoting LindaClement:

When the kids were little, and the rare visit to McD's or whatever, we'd buy one very large pop for everyone to share... Can't do that anymore.

Quoting Kainalu55:

i do if it's the same price!  Mcdonalds here in Hawaii stopped selling their extra large size.  I used to get it when all sodas were $1 regardless of the size, but i didn't always finish it!

I don't drink much soda and if I ever do it is definitely not oversized.  With that being said I think it is silly to try to ban them.  People can just get a refill on a small one so what good are you doing?  If people aren't responsible to make good health choices then they aren't responsible enough to make them whether you ban things or not.

I totally agree.

They should worry about the size purchased being identical to the size sold (make sure if it says it's 2 quarts, it's actually 2 quarts, kind of thing)...

I think it's a waste of time, people can just buy TWO sodas then.

I do buy larger sizes but not to consume myself, i share it with my 3 kids because its cheaper than buying 4 drinks
