what does it do to you that makes you enjoy it?

It has to have memorable characters for me. If I don't like the characters, then I can't enjoy the book. I might not like them in the sense that I couldn't be friends with them in real life; there might be someone that I love to hate, KWIM? I have to get into the world that the characters inhabit, care about what happens to them, etc.

Believable characters. I have to be able to envision the story in my mind
yep one does truly need to picture the story.
There has to be chemistry, with the author's narrative voice and me. When that happens, it's magic as I'm drawn into the story.
Most times, though, I enjoy the writing and the book but without that added magic.

Yes on that ...it is interesting how a book can be good and one knows it for reading and audio reading.
These & to use my imagination
