Hi!  My name is Kristin.  I joined this group a little while back because we just moved into a new home and I want to get the inside decorated while still being child friendly.

Here's my first dilemma :  I have a sliding glass door off my kitchen/dining area that goes to my back yard.  It gets a lot of use and a ton of sun for most of the day.  We currently have vertical blinds that are cheap and and falling apart.  I am really tired of verticals but because we have 3 cats that like to hang out by the sliding glass door with have always had them because they stood up to the cats.  However, now my son lies to pull on them and as much as we try to tell him no and get him to stop he has still managed to break some of them so they won't turn and earlier today he actually pulled on completely off.  So I was wondering if any of you had suggestions for something different.  I am not exactly crazy about drapes either.  Thanks for any help or tips you all can give me.  I am looking forward to picking every ones brains in the future.

Kristin

JC Penney does have a vertical blind that also looks like a drape.  You can get them in sheer so when the blides are open you can see through the material and to the outdoors.  Some of the brands make them so that you can remove the fabric from the blind and wash them.  It would keep your son from playing with the individual blinds since they are enclosed in fabric.  And, the cats can't use them as "weave poles".  They aren't cheap, I think regular size sliders cost approx $600 to cover.

Thanks for the suggestion!  I have seen those and like them.  I need something that is more of a blackout type or a thermal energy efficient.

Do to this being a well used sliding door area,  and gets alot of sunlight,  well......  that is a tough one, beings you really dont want to have drapes on the sides.
If you did use drapes, you could have them just on the one side,  that doesn't open, tied back, yet you can release them, during the day, when the sun is bright,  or in the evening for more privacy.
Or,  have the drapes to the one side as I mentioned,  with a sheer, tied back, that you could shut just the sheer, easily during the day,  yet, leave room to be able to open and close the slider.  Maybe choose a color of sheer, that wont fade to fast, or  one that can be washed easily when needed, yet can withstand the use of the washer for cleaning them.  You wouldn't have to go with a valance if you prefer not to. Then you would have to duck down everytime you go out and in. Let us know what you decide.  I know I have verticals on my sliding door,  and they do break with pulling them across, just with everyday usage,  and for you, with the younger child, it is more a fact,  that they will not withstand the pulling.  Are your cats declawed?  Just thought of that,  if not, they might decide to use the drape to climb or stretch on??
Humm.......  its a tough call on this.
Good luck looking around in some of the major dept stores, for some ideas also.
