The fear of "socialists?"

Posted by   + Show Post

Where does this fear of "socialists" come from?  Obama is not A socialist, period.  Bernie Sanders IS a socialist Senator and no one seems to be afraid of him. I am asking sincerely.  Is it a holdover from the Cold War days or something else?

Bernie Sanders could not be more irrelevant if he was dead. He isn't dead yet is he?

The leaders you are referring to, I am assuming Stalin and Mao, and the Kim dynasty in North Korea were leaders who decided to make their own cult of personalities based initially on a false sense of communism, and were all very sick people.  I am in no way trying to even gloss over what these people have done, but they did it for their own self interest, which is not socialism or communism, an idealistic state after socialism transforms society.

Communism and Socialism never works. The 2 philosophies rob the individual of their freedom and creativity to prosper. Political systems of control and suppression. Interesting how some liberals claim Socialism is the answer because under this system of gov't personal freedom is trampled upon and abused. Here in America they shout for freedom of choice. Europe is a perfect ex. of the failed policies of Socialism and progressive liberalism. True social justice gives freely from the heart. It is not forced upon the individual~

Quoting blondekosmic15:

To use the word fear is a misconception. I am not fearful. I am very concerned about Socialism and Communism which deprives the individual of their free will to prosper and exercise choice. Countries which practice these 2 philosophies suppress the ppl., they starve and are brutally killed by the 1000's. The 20th Century is filled with horrific stories revealing the truth about Socialism amd Communism~

Barack Obama has a trail of Socialist and Communist friends since childhood! Frank Marshall Davis, a Communist, was a childhood mentor of the current President.

I dont fear socialists. I fear that socialist ideals are taking over my country.
LOL, I wasnt really alive during the cold war so much, so no, that's not it. ;)

I am a capitalist. I believe that nothing motivates a person, like personal reward. Socialism goes agains basic human nature, which is to be selfish, and look after one's own immediate survival. Not admirable, and we should strive to overcome this nature, but it is our nature. It will not be overcome by mandates, or force.

I'd rather have a country full of people motivated by intrinsic values than by money. Human beings aren't selfish by nature...we're a communal species. The more detached we become from each other and the natural world the more selfish we become. Selfishness is something money promotes and is far from a prescription for a healthy human being and healthy community.

Our intrinsic value system is that of self survival. I believe that we are communal only to the point that it serves our needs. We simply will not strive for a goal from which we do not benifit, as individuals.

I disagree. There are so many people who do things for others when they don't even get any credit for it or any reward. It happens all the time. We do have that feeling of altruism from the time we are young and that continues ...unless we have been completey disappointed and handled with cruelty by loved ones.Distancing and pushing people away, then thinking only of what you will get out of life is a sign of an abused person who has lost faith.ANd that is frightening.

I would propose that there is always a reward. A beief in karma, higher power. From the time we are young we are taught that certain behaviors are good. Therfore certain behaviors make us feel good. That is its own reward.

Please understand I am not painting mankind as vile hateful creatures. I am simply saying that if you look hard enough everything we do is driven by a desire for self benefit. Socialism ignores that basic motivational factor. Requiring a group of individuals to make sacrafices,  from which only others benefit, will not work for long

I still disagree. And that isn't really what Socialism is all about anyway.

You're free to do so. You're also free to clear up whatever misconceptions you feel I may have regarding what Socialism is all about.

I know that, and you know that. The people that need to know that, are unwillinging or incappable of knowing.

The trouble today is that once you get kicked down, no matter what has happened to you to get there either through your own fault or just crappy things life throws at you  it is almost impossible to get back up again without help. Once your credit report is messed up you can't get loans, can't buy a house, can't rent an apartment in a safe neighborhood, get turned down for jobs the list goes on. No matter how badly you want to make your life better doors just get slammed in your face at every turn. People against the idea of socialism are held up on the idea that everybody in the country who needs assistance is some fat lazy bastard sitting on their butts watching soap operas all day perfectly content to do nothing and take checks. Some of those people exist but most people just want to be able to get through a rough patch and be able to be self sufficient. They assume nobody will want to work if some basic things are provided. That's BS. There will always be a percentage of lazy people. I for one would be even more motivated to work if I knew that the money taken out my check every month was gonna actually do something for the betterment of society as a whole. That it would mean people wouldn't have to live in fear of their children going hungry or not having a roof over their heads at night. That people could go to the doctor if they were sick or injured. I have lived all over the world and most civilized countries have already socialized things like healthcare, and higher education. They are a hell of alot healthier and content than we are here. I just think the governments priorties are in the wrong place. Focusing on war and global domination, putting profits before our citizens isn't working. We are failing as a country. More and more people are in need of some kind of help everyday. I love the Idea of what America is suposed to be and represent. We are closer to facism than democracy right now.We don't need to take more from people we just need to shift where the money is going. Less to war, less to bail out companies. More to the actual people. Sorry ranting. I just feel strongly that if we support each other instead only caring about ourselves we would all be stronger.   I don't feel that it is human instinct to be only self interested. That is a conditioned response to the environment we have become accustomed to live in.  Continuing to act in this manner will cause us to self destruct.
