Mitt Romney Commissioned Pro-America Pins, Made Them In China

At a fundraiser in Virginia last night, Mitt Romney touted his experience running the Salt Lake City Olympic Games in 2002 — a familiar refrain — but also introduced a new rhetorical line about something more specific: lapel pins. He told a story about the “We Stand United” American flag pins he commissioned for the games, which took place just months after the terror attacks on 9/11. Romney touted his creation of the pins as a means to explain how he hopes to bring Americans together:

ROMNEY: And so we created a little pin and we notified people that we’re now going to be selling these pins and the proceeds are going to go [to charity]. … I just remember going downstairs after it was announced — we were in a big, tall skyscraper in Salt Lake City, and it must have been next door I think where they were selling these pins, and there was a line all the way down the street.

Watch it:

Complicating Romney’s patriotic message is the fact that the pins were made in China, according to a website run by the Utah state government’s culture department, as TPM’s Evan McMorris-Santoro pointed out on Twitter.

Outsourcing has been a latent issue in the campaign, and just yesterday the Obama campaign released an ad hitting Romney for “shipp[ing] American jobs to places like Mexico and China” when he led Bain Capital. Indeed, Bain was outsourcing jobs even while Romney was governor. And his top economic adviser Greg Mankiw (who was recently promoted to chairman of Harvard’s economics department) said that “offshoring” American jobs is a good thing.

Meanwhile, Lynn Sweet at the Chicago Sun-Times notes that a conference call hosted by the Republican National Committee (RNC) yesterday attacking President Obama for “high unemployment” was hosted by a firm in The Philippines (apparently a subcontractor of Verizon, whom the RNC used).

What's the big deal? The DNC novelty stuff is also made in China.  If outsourcing is a big issue for the "D's", then why was Jeffrey Immelt hired by the Obama administration?

GE’s Waukesha headquarters currently employs 120 people in its X-ray division. While company spokespeople insist job losses in the US as a result of the move will be limited or non-existent, the company hasn’t yet released the number of new jobs it intends to create in Beijing instead of Wisconsin.

The news is coming as a painful slap in the face by the Obama administration. General Electric’s CEO, Jeff Immelt, is President Obama’s Jobs Czar. Mr. Immelt is the one man in the country whose main focus is supposed to be on created jobs here in America. To find out that the man most responsible for developing a strategy to create domestic jobs and put Americans back to work is instead spending his time devising clever and profitable ways to send American jobs to China is nothing short of insulting to the average American worker.

Have you ever tried to find novelty items like this that aren't made outside the US?  It's not easy to find them.  I'm sure he ordered them from and had them designed by a US company but the products are ultimately made in other countries.   I have a small business where we make custom printed items and I have a very hard time finding any made in the US products.

The big deal is that the GOP constantly makes an issue of Obama's policies leading to job losses in America and outsorcing to countries in Asia.  Once again Romney proves he is a hypocrite

Oops! A quick google search brings up a number of companies who manufacture these things in the good ol' USA. A big deal in the grand scheme...No. But just to cover your butt and make sure these things don't make headlines, you think they'd have put some more thought into it. Oh well, on to the next mini scandal.

If Romney's elected we'll just get more of the same (the Bush Presidency) that got us here in the first place. Democrats don't get off scott free either. But they are definitely the lesser of 2 "evils". My vote will be for Obama. He has shown that he cares about this country & us, it's citizens, despite all of the road blocks put in his way by republicans. I believe in him...Romney will bury us while he & his rich friends will continue to get richer & more powerful!

So Romney is responsible for sending "Cheap Crap Made In China" jobs to China????   That's ridiculous.  However, hiring Jeffrey Immelt as a "Jobs Czar" is hilariously hypocritical.  While the CEO of GE, Jeffery Immelt  outsourced many jobs to China.

Not saying what you found is this way but in my business I've found that a lot of the products are actually still manufatured abroad but printed or personalized by a company in the US.  I've found that you have to be very careful about how you search for the items and the wording that each company uses as well.  Again, not saying that you didn't find some that are actually manufactured in the US.
