Poll: Public Doesn’t Agree With Conservatives’ Extreme Views On Regulation

by Ruy Teixeira

When conservatives aren’t talking about cutting taxes for the rich, they’re getting misty-eyed about removing business regulations. Indeed, nothing less than the obliteration of all current restrictions on business would appear to satisfy them. There’s just one problem: The public doesn’t share this commitment.

On the contrary, the public understands that a free market economy needs regulation to serve the common good. And as a matter of fact, that was its verdict by a wide 63-31 margin in the Pew Research Center’s new American Values Survey released in April.

public supports regulation

In the same survey, the public called for stricter laws and regulations when it comes to protecting the environment by an overwhelming 74-25 margin.

Conservatives may be convinced that the “magic of the market” obviates the need for laws governing business. But the public clearly does not agree.

Can you find a poll a little less biased.

The OP is confused - those who want NO regulation go by the name of Libertarian...conservatives in general aren't that extreme.  We want to limit the scope of regulation, enough to protect citizens from fraud and abuse, but not enough to limit competition and free market principles.

Yes, and it also strangely seems to act as if its claim would be an anomaly. Imagine the headline: "Poll/ Public Doesn't agree with Liberals' Extreme Views on a Public Option."

Ooooh, shocking!

The most pressing social issue today is the economy

Polls that are this vague annoy me. What regulations are they talking about? Some are good and some aren't. How can anyone give a useful answer if we don't know which regulation they are talking about?!

We need regulations.Companies will press people until there is war between them and their employees because they want profit over everything else.

Some are good and some aren't. I could write a book of examples of ones that aren't, but I won't because I'm on my phone. But, I will say that my husband is actually looking at selling his truck and getting out of trucking altogether because of new BS regulations that have been put in place. Sometimes regulations are good, sometimes they are counter-productive.

Those videos are funny but in a sad way, and all the major retailers are having their workers go through anti-union training, because they know there is a push to organize retail, even right now at a Target in NY there is a re-vote because of management using illegal scare tactics.

Quoting mehamil1:

The managers are fanatical about talk of union. When I worked at Kohl's and Staples especially. We watched anti union videos about what to do if someone came up to us wanting to unionize and we were tell our manager about it immediately. They fear them something awful. If they didn't, they wouldn't make whole videos about it. I thought it was hilarious in a very sad way.

Quoting matreshka:

This is exactly why unions need to shift their focus and help retail organize unions to protect their rights at the workplace.

I do not believe in the magic of the market. I believe that there would be certain business owners who would turn their workers into slaves if it meant they could get a huge profit out of it. Those regulations keep that from happening. Do away with them and we'd be living in a 21st century Upton Sinclair novel.

I truly believe that. Some of these people are so full of greed and have such sociopathic tendencies, these regulations keep people from literally being killed for the sake of profit. Like coal mining, gas extraction, oil, meat packing (that needs to be looked at again, many people are getting hurt since the meat packing unions were busted and regulations were loosened and OSHA being gutted). Also manufacturing and the service industries. I've worked retail and the managers of the store complied with the very basics of state labor laws. They got away with as much as they possibly could though.

I can see your point. I've read of certain regulations being passed just to put a competitor out of business. That used to happen here in Chicago all the time, blatantly. It still happens but much more quietly and subtly and without any kind of paper trail.

I was just on the city of Chicago website looking at city job openings but the process just to look at the openings was really interesting. I had to fill out an electronic form and then fax or mail my resume and degrees to human resources who would then approve or deny that in about a week. And that needs to be done before I can even look to see what jobs are even open!

There's many more steps to go through and through out the whole thing is this:

UNDER NO CIRCIMSTANCES ARE YOU TO PUT DOWN THE NAME OF ANY ELECTED OFFICIAL OF EITHER PARTY.

Yes, it was all caps and in bold. I wonder if the federal government had a hand in that? Or does every major municipality have that in place? Either way, selective hiring happens and a great deal of the time it's union people who kissed a lot of ass. Unions are strong (more or less) in Chicago and a lot of them are corrupt. It happens. It's a symptom in a larger problem in how our society conducts itself.
