Do You agree with Democrat, Andre Carson? Should US schools be modeled after Islamic madrassas?

Speaking about the American education system, Carson told the audience that American schools should be modeled after Madrassas and touted the benefits of schools that use the Koran as their "foundation."

Should us schools be modeled after ANY religion?

(I would have preferred to have just posted the YouTube video, but my new toy (iPad) and I are figuring things out. So, to provide a link with the video, I settled for the Blaze.)

Absolutely not.  The schools should be about academics ONLY.  NO social issues, NO religious issues, etc etc etc.

My kids' school also has a character counts program and they are a great school.  It just seems like a lot of schools pay lip service to things like character or anti-bullying campaigns but when push comes to shove they aren't dealt with properly.

Social issues like what?  We deal with social issues in my 10th grade world history class.  I think certain subject lend themselves to conversations about social issues.  As long as the teacher isn't pushing an agenda, social issues have to be dealt with to a certain extent in certain subjects.

I have no idea if they do here or not. I homeschool. No need to feel sorry for my kids. They are getting excellent character training. ;-)

If your school is not, then I feel very sorry for your children. My school does and has for many years. This is what we do...our school and the community helps to support it.

Why do you think that isn't already happening?  Has there just not been enough demand for it?

Quoting StephanieSH:

I do.  I think it can be embedded into the curriculum.  It doesn't have to be an extra subject or unit.

As a high school teacher, the thing I see that is missing in our kids is character.  That's the one thing I like about faith-based schools. They usually try and instill a strong sense of character.  That being said, I think character education can be done in public schools without a religious component.  I'm not for mixing religion and public schools.

Do you feel that schools have the time to try to "teach character"?

I am not in favor of public schools based on a religion but if Carson means the schools should follow the organization or instructional methods I have no problem with that.  Public education is in trouble.  We should be looking at any working model we can find.

Uh, so pretty much you just want kids to learn to read and add?

Every facet of life has attached social issues.  Why not just make sure kids have good critical thinking skills so they can think through the issues that make up reality?

I know its hard to understand. But religion was founded in the middle east(think Jerusalem and palestine), also, Christians stole from every single religion in existence, climbed, on a boat sailed.to the Americas, because pale face was not gonna accept a brown man as their saviour and Christ. So they came here killed the natives, and hung a white man on a cross with a Mexicans name. And we designed our own personal jesus

Agreed.  Never ceases to amaze me.  I come on here and there is always at least one CM member that makes me SMH and hope and pray they aren't homeschooling history lessons to their children.
