I love CM polls. I make no apologies. I love them! I think we need more topics with polls.

Anywho, with all of the power outages in the Mid West and Mid Atlantic in the blistering heat and after my own experience with a ten day power outage last fall thanks to Hurricane Irene, I can't think of a better solution for the safety of our citizenry and the need for jobs, than putting electrical lines underground.

It's definitely a complex issue given the lines are privately owned and some of the land is public.

Do you think it's viable?

Not sarcasm at all.  I said Finland because it is very cold, gets lots of snow but is also very good at keeping infrastructure running during their long cold winters.

Totally serious about the home-generators too.  The Army Core of Engineers has been commissioned to create something like them, principally for use on the battlefield.  If they can make them, I want one!

Quoting Kate_Momof3:

Is this sarcasm?

I think the idea of having a self-contained generator is a great idea.

Quoting Meadowchik:

What do the Finnish do?

I say let's just skip ahead to clean, eission-capturing at-home power generators fueled by household garbage.

Back in 1993 --the day President Clinton was inaugurated-- we had in Washington what has gone down in history as the "inauguration day storm." The little town we lived in at the time has always had all of the power lines buried. So, while most of the Seattle area was without power for weeks (they set up an emergency shelter in the Tacoma Dome), we were almost unaffected beyond debris in the road.
So because of that experience, I do believe power lines should be buried. It's a good investment.

Electric companies would probably pass the cost down to its customers.  A few years ago OH suffered massive damage due to the remants of Hurricane Ike.  Some people were out of power for several weeks.  Duke Energy eventually passed the cost of repairs down to its customers.

Quoting Kate_Momof3:

Big difference between mining and burying power lines.

What about the power companies? Why don't you see them as a roadblock?

Quoting rocketracer:

You may call my attitude negative, but i'm being realtistic.  In several places in WV the down power lines are in the mountains and at this time are only reachable by air.  Environmentalist already object to under ground and mountain top coal mining.   Dealing with environmentalist is a realistic road block.

Quoting Kate_Momof3:

I don't have those answers. That's why I posted the question. Don't pawn off your negative attitude about this option off on environmentalists.

My guess is the electric companies won't be pleased with a project like this.

Blaming a group that has zero power or influence by comparison isn't fair or honest.

Quoting rocketracer:

How long would this take to do....the environmentalist would be all up in arms about destroying the habitats of several species of animals, bugs, etc.....especially in the mountainous regions of WV, TN, etc.

I can see it being delayed by piles of good ol' bureaucracy.

My subdivision has buried power (and anything else) lines.

The only utility poles are the Street lights, makes for a very nice look.

Power never goes out "in" our neighborhood, although it doesn't stop it from going out somewhere up the line.

I honestly don't know but it would be worth looking into. I agree that the power companies would just past any costs along to their customers.

Thank God......it's Friday!!!

That is the system in NYC. Few years back we didn't have power for over a week during the summer. It was miserable. They didn't use the funds to do the upkeep on the lines and when they went down a bunch were effected and needed to be replaced. Another NYC FAIL.

They didn't use the funds for their intended purpose....imagine that.....doesn't only happen in NYC....same could be said for the levy in LA....same could be said for Social Security....

Yea grew up in LA. It's a shame how things work. We pay taxes that are supposed to cover these things and the funds are never used for their intended purpose. This country is truly a mess.

...and some people still don't have a problem with being told by the gov't that the gov't needs more of our money to fix things....

That blackout was due to a blown transformer somewhere in Canada, I think. I know that, as a result ConEd and the other privately owned power companies had to reroute a bunch of lines and make stopgaps to prevent that kind of chain reaction.

It was also speculated that it was due to overtaxing the system, i.e. the money customers were paying the power companies was NOT going toward basic maintenance and upgrading old lines and transformers.
