Rick Santorum: Romney Must Choose a Pro-Life Running Mate

In a new interview, former Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum says Mitt Romney should select a pro-life running mate.

“For the Republican Party to nominate someone who is pro-choice would be as much of a problem for the Democrats to nominate someone who is pro-life,” he said in an interview with ABC News.

Fortunately, Romney has pledged to do just that. During a 2011 presidential candidate forum in South Carolina, Romney made a pledge to only select a running mate who hared his pro-life views on abortion.

Moderator: Governor Romney, will the person you chose as your vice presidential running mate be someone who shares your pro-life and pro-marriage convictions?

Romney: I certainly imagine so, I haven’t made and selections in that regard…[as I look around at the people I would consider] I would expect that they would all be pro-life and pro-traditional marriage…but this is an important enough issue that the person that I would select in that position would share my views on those important issues.

Host: So more than just expectation – would share those views?

Romney: Yes.. that person would share my views, yeah.

Moreover, Romney talked with Weekly Standard reporter John McCormack about a vice-presidential selection in March and renewed his commitment to a pro-life running mate.

Romney: “I don’t have a list at this stage. I haven’t put together a list. I haven’t done any thinking about a VP contender at this point. I would anticipate that whoever our nominee is would start with a very long list because frankly we have quite a group of people who have the skill and the credibility to be viable members of a national ticket. So he asked me about a couple of names but there are – I don’t have to tell you this – there’s a long list of very capable folks, including people who’ve run this cycle.”

TWS: “Would anyone on that list be pro-choice?”

Romney: “No.”

I agree. I think he would make a grave mistake if he doesn't.

Nail in his coffin if he does that.

If Romney intends to win, he must secure the moderate, Independent vote- Good luck with that if he chooses a candidate hyoerfocused on that personal, social issue-

If he does then we might as well call this whole farce off.

He's not going to win. We all know Romney is pro reproductive rights and probably could give a shit about gay people. These issues are over and done with. They aren't going away. Roe v. Wade will never be over turned. All the asshole politicians who passed those draconian laws will be replaced in 2012 with people who will over turn and repeal those laws.

You have lost. Focus on helping the children who are already here need help. Focus on the poverty they are in and the hunger they feel and adopt the kids who have not a single person in this world who wants them. Focus on ending wars and support expanding access to reproductive tools like the pill (and other devices) and condoms. What prevents abortions is avoiding unintended pregnancies. Expanding access to contraceptives is what brings down abortions. Education on safe sex as well. Cause lets face it, humans will never ever stop having sex. It's part of who we are as a species. We can no more shut off the need to have sex than we can shut off the need to eat and sleep. It's built into our brains and part of our DNA. So lets work with what we have and what we know and take care of the children who are constantly coming into this world knowing nothing but abuse and neglect.

I don't think it matters at all anymore. He could choose Jesus and he will still lose.

Cause Jesus isn't meant to win. And neither is Romney. If the republicans wanted to win they would have picked someone else to challenge Obama.

Let's face it, Republicans are organized and shrewd.  They're focus is on producing a viable candidate in 2016.

I agree he will, since he is a conservative christian who is anti-abortion.  Most of all because he said he would.

I'm not worried. There are oodles of Conservatives to pick from that fit that bill. Anyway, why would he not? He doesn't need to pander to groups like Obama.
