Rep. Eric Cantor: Labor Day celebrates business owners
“Today, we celebrate those who have taken a risk, worked hard, built a business and earned their own success,” the conservative congressman said in a statement. “I am committed to keeping taxes low and reducing red tape to make it easier for Virginia’s small business owners to start hiring again, create more jobs and ensure a thriving economy for the future so more people can achieve the American dream.”
However, Labor Day actually celebrates the victories of trade and labor organizations in the United States, who fought for 8-hour work days and other standards that most Americans take for granted.
The first Labor Day was organized by the Central Labor Union of New York City in 1882, according to the Department of Labor. Other labor organizations across the country quickly adopted the celebration.
In 1894, Congress made the celebration a federal holiday.
“The vital force of labor added materially to the highest standard of living and the greatest production the world has ever known and has brought us closer to the realization of our traditional ideals of economic and political democracy,” the Department of Labor explains. “It is appropriate, therefore, that the nation pay tribute on Labor Day to the creator of so much of the nation’s strength, freedom, and leadership — the American worker.”

The minimum wage worker at the small business owners job

The republican party isn't worried about "the little people"
The POTUS, the head of the Democratic party, said the same thing, so I guess the Democrats aren't "worried about "the little people".
And to tell the truth, you can not littler than a small business owner.
And that's why you're a Liberal Democrat and I'm a Conservative Republican:)
Quoting sweet-a-kins:
I agree with 0% of this

The republican party isn't worried about "the little people"That's not true, what do you think Capitalism is? Small business, Conservative Republicans support these 100%. It's the Democrats that support more government and a president that is a Socialist and that doesn't show concerns for "the little people" but the government controlling our lives. Sorry, but you got it backwards.
If it weren't for the small business owners I wouldn't have my job which is a blessing:)
All of that is awesome!
But it has nothing to do with his inaccurate statements about what Labor Day celebrates and why it began.
Quoting 29again:I work for a small business owner. I don't have most of the "benefits" that are now standard for the average worker -- no paid holidays, no paid vacay, no insurance, no performance reviews, etc etc etc. But I see how much work he puts in at the store I am in, and he has 3 other stores. And he does work from his home, too. So, yeah, I appreciate the small business owner way more than I do some union shop, or a large corp that does not know who is working for them. My boss knows my name, about my kids, knows my phone #, etc. I am not a cog in a wheel. I don't have a bunch of silly rules to follow as if I were still in kindergarten, don't have to get permission to go to the ladies room... I am treated as a grown-up, as a person, and with tremendous respect. I have not found that in very many places I have worked. So, while I don't have all those wonderful benefits (which my boss does not have either, btw) I will take that over the lack of respect I find elsewhere.
I like Cantor.
And that is about what the small business owner makes, if you consider the number of hours worked for the wage received.

Maybe back in the day, we celebrated what the unions did for workers. The unions are now screwing the workers. I do not celebrate that. I celebrate the freedom of the people to take the risk to own their own business. I celebrate the small business owner for going above and beyond what the "average worker" would even consider doing.
Quoting Kmary:All of that is awesome!

With OSHA, and all the other fair labor laws, child labor laws, etc? We don't need unions anymore, they are a drain on the economy, imo.
Quoting sweet-a-kins:
And if it weren't for labor unions we would have oppressive work places and sweat shops for kids..or should I say we would STILL have them..
Quoting Sweet_Faith:If it weren't for the small business owners I wouldn't have my job which is a blessing:)
Ok, sweets. SOME small business owners end up making minimum wage or thereabouts when you consider the number of hours worked in a week for the pay received. Same thing goes for some salaried employees in some franchise businesses, too.
