Obama vs Romney Polls A Majority of Americans Agree With Romney and Conservative Views

With all the bad press and polling that the Romney campaign has gotten recently, here's some data that may actually prove that he is saying something that people want to hear in election 2012.

A majority of Americans say the government is doing too much, doing too many things, and has become too hands-on for its own good. Alternatively, they believe free markets and individuals should instead take a greater role in solving our most pressing problems.

According to the latest Gallup Poll, a majority of Americans - 54% - continue to believe the government is trying to do too many things that should be left to individuals and businesses, although that is down from the record high of 61% earlier this summer. About four in 10 Americans - 39% - say the government should do more to solve the nation's problems.

So Romney's "less is better" bureaucratic approach is actually appreciated by many Americans.

In the 20 years of asking this question, the majority of Gallup respondees have only a handful of few times said government should do more to solve the nation's problems than they have said it is doing too much. The first was in the fall of 1992 and early 1993, right when Bill Clinton took office. The second time occurred in October 2011, immediately after the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

As Gallup explains, this data point is a huge deal: "The appropriate role of government in addressing the nation's problems is one of the most divisive issues in this year's presidential election. President Barack Obama tends to support the idea that government should do more to address the country's problems, while Mitt Romney generally takes the opposite view."

The polling is generally split along party lines. As Gallup outlines, two-thirds of Democrats think government should do more, while an even larger percentage of Republicans say government is doing too much that should be left to individuals and businesses. More than six in 10 independents agree that the government is doing too much.

So is the take-away here that more Americans embrace conservativism? Or even that free market libertarianism is becoming commonplace in American culture?

The results are so far inconclusive, and this is only one data point. Besides, American values tend to want less control. It's the cowboy complex in all of us.

Either way, somewhere out there, former GOP presidential nominee and libertarian Congressman Ron Paul is smiling: He loves the free markets.

Romney wants a smaller government when it comes to his paying taxes yet he sure worries about the 47 percent he says doesn't pay taxes and drains the government. I doubt if all that many people agree with him on that.

If you think Obama is the answer to all that ails America, you're either uneducated or clueless.

Quoting asaffell:

If you actually think Romney/Ryan believe in a smaller government, you're deluded.

How about we all agree that neither the republicans nor the democrats want a smaller government?

What exactly do people mean when they say they want small government.  Do they want the states to take over and have no federal interference, or funding.  Do they want to have less regulation, and what regulation do they want stopped,  bank or wall street regulations.  Safety of our airlines, or water or roads, education. What do they mean please do explain.  However, the GOP wants small government with it seems one exception, women's issues there they are trying to redefine rape, Ryan/Akins plan,  their platform is against abortion in any case.    Do people think the government should just support the military or business's supporting the military, if that is the case then war will be the GOP's jobs plan.

Surprise, surprise, no answers.

Spewing the party line.

OH, and small government usually means: cut everything that anyone else uses, but do not dare touch MY piece of the pie. That is what most mean when they talk about cutting spending and supporting less government.

Separation of church and state is for the protection of BOTH church and state.

Obviously you haven't seen any of the more than 900 Executive Orders obama has signed--most creating stupid committees and overseeors for regulations the government doesn't need to do.  Most of his Executive Orders were signed because whiney crybaby obama couldn't get any one, not even the dems, to do what HE wanted.

The regulations are already costing close to 100,000 job losses as we speak.  Ya, you can go read the news on your own to find out about all the layoffs which have already started.

America in general is still quite conservative compared to many other developed nations.  Liberal in America, or Conservative in America, are not the same as their spectrum counterparts in other nations.

great questions, would love to see some honest reasonable answers, I think you hit on exactly where the ball gets dropped in these conversations and people revert back their fear based rhetoric.

I;m sorry but calling the President names does not answer my question.    I have not seen the President cry, and if it did he is only human , just like John Boehner lol    What I cannot understand is people insisting the President is deliberately doing things to hurt the country, the well has been poisoned with all the talk of him being a socialist, blah blah blah  I don't think at this point  many people are undecided, that is why Romney spoke about the 47%  he only has to worry about a small margin of people
