GOP Rep, Religious Leaders Accuse Obama Admin. of Religious ‘Hypocrisy’ Over Controversial ‘Piss Christ’ Photograph

Piss Christ Photograph to Go On Display in Manhattan, New York

(AP)

An infamous anti-Christian photograph titled “Piss Christ,” showing a small plastic crucifix soaked in the artist’s urine, will go on display in Manhattan’s Edward Tyler Nahem Gallery on Thursday, The New York Post reports.

Almost immediately after it was announced that “Piss Christ” would be making a surprise return to the Big Apple, Christian leaders and conservative lawmakers began accusing the Obama administration of religious hypocrisy, saying while the White House has been silent on the anti-Christian photograph, it has constantly and strongly condemned the low-budget anti-Muslim YouTube clip “Innocence of Muslims” that offended people of the Islamic faith and supposedly sparked unrest in the Middle East.

“The Obama administration’s hypocrisy and utter lack of respect for the religious beliefs of Americans has reached an all-time high,” Rep. Michael Grimm (R-N.Y.) told Fox News. “I call on President Obama to stand up for America’s values and beliefs and denounce the ‘Piss Christ’ that has offended Christians at home and abroad.”

“Piss Christ” made its official debut in 1989. Then Republican Senator Alfonse D’Amato, of New York, slammed the photograph during a speech on the Senate floor, calling it “a deplorable, despicable piece of vulgarity.” He went on to tear a reproduction of the photograph to shreds and tossed the pieces on the ground, according to The New York Times.

Bill Donohue, president of the Catholic League, told Fox News that there appears to be a “protected class” for Muslims and some other segments of the population.

Did Obama try and ban the movie in the US?

If Piss Christ caused outrage in other countries, I'm thinking Obama would speak as openly about it as he did the movie.

Since the reaction to the piece of art hasn't caused said reaction in other countries, trying to draw some parallel to it is illogical. It makes no sense.

BUT now that the Post has manufactured some outrage over it, the same old anti-Obama ladies who get all upset when their persecuted Christianity is threatened will get all kerfluffled yet again.

That's trash. Only a sick, deprived (edit. depraved) individual would see it as art. Why are some so fixated on bodily fluids? YUCK!

Gee, it's been around since 1989....? Can't help but notice that no village nor embassy was burned down due to the offensive material. Imagine that.

Yes, and no presidents "apologized" either for our constitutional beliefs in freedom of speech.

What does the Obama adminiistration have to do with what a private museum chooses to display?  Any more than he has to do with a movie?  The answer is nothing.

But obama is being discriminatory.  The anti-muslim movie is wrong because it offends Muslims.  It's got to work all ways--if Christians are offended by the Piss Christ then it should not be in the U.S.

Just be fair.

Let's be fair, here.  How many Christians took to the streets and burned down embassies, and protested everything due to this so-called art?  That's  the big difference here.  We Christians will look the other way, and just choose not to watch those things that we find offensive, while others will make demands and get all violent about it.

No one's asking for it to be banned, just a statement how reprehensible it is. But I guess that only works for Muslims and people who do violent protests.

Oh wait, it turns out some of the protests weren't about the movie after all.
