Format and Quality of political debate

What do you think of the general quality of political debate in your country?  What can be done to improve it?

 I think I like the American format better than the UK's, but not as much as the French.  The French format is actually one candidate taking atleast 3 hours to debate several different journalists on a range of topics.  It's nonstop, all eyes on them.  I think it gives a much better chance to see the depth of understanding and detail and not depend on knocking anyone down to make their own argument viable.
