Mitt Romney Uses Smoke & Mirrors To Win the Debate

Posted by Nadia Jones on October 5, 2012

obamaVoters have had an opportunity to digest their reactions to the first presidential debate and the fact that Big Bird may have stolen the show.

As I watched the debate, I'll admit that by the end of the first round I started watching the clock tick with nervousness and anxiety. Time was running out and Mitt Romney had a clear strategy and plan of attack for the night. To win the debate using the "fake it until you make it" and smoke and mirrors approach to try and fool the American people into believing the falsehoods he was saying were true. Romney had great stage presence; he was confident, comfortable, relaxed, was even joking and laughing at times. For the first time in the last 18 months, I found him almost likable.

As for President Obama, I'm still trying to figure out what his strategy was. Obama did not challenge Romney enough, he didn't dismiss Romney's false claims and at times the President seemed aloof.

What happened Mr. President?

Even though Obama missed a number of opportunities to defend his policies, numerous independent, non-partisan sources have reported that Romney's allegations, although eloquently stated, were false. Not just false, but some of them impossible or highly exaggerated. Think Progress, for example, reported that Romney stated 27 myths within 38 minutes. FactCheck.org called Romney a "serial exaggerator" and pointed out issues with statements from both candidates.

Will voters see through the smoke? I'm not so sure. I'm afraid that not enough voters have or will fact check the statements. But we owe it to ourselves and to the future of this country to check the facts.

I also think that Obama will recover in a big way in the next two debates giving Obama just the edge he needs to win this election and  save Big Bird and ultimately, Obamacare.

Do YOU think it was all smoke and mirrors?

I don't think it was smoke and mirrors.  I think it was a simple matter of him being much more aggressive and the President didn't respond to things that he really should have.

Hmm, yes.....kinda.  The numbers game any politician plays.....always seems to have a hidden agenda.  Rob Peter to pay Paul.  We the voter need to decide which Peter we want robbed.

The media has so much control over the public opinion.  If they said blue was really red......a majority of people would then believe that too, lol.

I think the next 3 debates will offer more for the public to chew on as well as the media talking heads.  It's substance & details that matters; not mere mention of a specific topic.

The jury is still out on this one, hopefully.

He was more aggressive (and rude).

His numbers do not add up though- all wind and no sail is how I would describe his performance.

Obama was lackluster, but did not stoop to the same level.

MR was in a win or go fishing predicament. BO was not.

Some folks are easily fooled with fancy wrapping-

Good Lord... some people just can't believe that Romney is the stonger candidate and Obama is a weak, bitter loser.

When you look back at what he said, there wasn't much of substance and many of it didn't calculate accurately, or it refuted statements he's been making for the last year plus.

But he gave a good show, and challenged Obama often. Many seem happy with that in a President.

Yes it was all smoke and mirrors. At some point Obama mentioned Romney has no plan to debate.

Anyone can 'win'not a debate if they don't stick to the truth. He said a lot, but most of it was bull.

I've seen in social media, once all the shock wore off, most people looked at the facts and the awe over Romney's debate was gone.

I think it was the fact that Obama is afraid of conflict and he didn't have the Media to save his Ass. Romney was on point the whole debate and utterly nice to him, But Obama acted like a scared puppy with his talk between his legs!!! Is that what we really need in a Pres??? No we need a MAN that will stand up for our rights, freedoms, and liberties. And Obama is not that man. Obamacare is taking away our rights, freedoms, and liberties. He has turned into KING HENRY 3rd!!!!!! Is that what you want to be taxed to death?? you want to be taxed to the point you can't feed your family!

And this wole thing about big bird is stupid. OUR child do not need to watch T.V. The Telly is not your damn babysitter. Get up off your fat lazy ass and teach your own children. Children need to be out side play, or reading, doing chorse to earn that 30 min t.v. time a week!!!

Romney is the stronger candidate? LOL

I love how Romney and his supporters are acting like his win seals the deal for him. Yet, they call Obama arrogant.
