New Wingnut Complaint: The Obamas are being too Christian at Christmastime

NEW WINGNUT COMPLAINT: THE OBAMAS ARE BEING TOO CHRISTIAN AT CHRISTMASTIME

The Obamas can't win. Via Matt Drudge, I see that Andrew Malcolm of Investor's Business Daily is complaining that the First Family is overdoing the celebration of Jesus' birth. Can't they tone it down a little bit?

As Americans face a fiscal cliff, the Obamas make do with 54 Christmas trees

Amazing how a reelection can reshape an incumbent's thinking about many things. Now safely ensconced in the White House for 49 more months, the Obamas have decorated the place with 54 Christmas trees this year.

Even allowing for the usual Washington excesses with taxpayer money, that's a whole grove of Christmas trees.

"We have 54 trees in the White House," an excited Michelle Obama proudly told visitors the other day. "54! That's a lot of trees."

In fact, the Obamas' 54 trees this year are almost 50% more Christmas trees than last year....

Not only does wingnut Malcolm think the Obamas are being too Christian, he thinks they're not being green enough:

Now, how much carbon do you suppose those 54 trees could be sequestering had they not been chopped by this green president?

And it just gets worse and worse:

In addition to 54 Christmas trees, Michelle Obama has overseen the placement of thousands of ornaments in public rooms. Many of the ornaments celebrate the Obama family dog, Bo, who seems to have become the First Family's favorite symbol of Christmas. Other decorations, including on the more prominent trees, were made by children in schools on U.S. military bases.

Yes, it's actually come to this: right-wingers are apparently against the children of the troops. And dogs. No word yet on Mom and apple pie, but I'm sure if Barack and Michelle express their support for those two...

So what is Christian about having a Christmas tree, let alone 54? Christmas trees didn't become widespread in the US until the 1800s.

Isn't one enough? I think the concern is COST to the AMERICAN TAXPAYER. Wouldn't one be better for the wallet of the AMERICAN TAXPAYER, the environment, and the carbon footprint of the Obamas and the White House? I thought they cared about the environment! I'd hate to see the size of THAT footprint!

If the Obamas want a fancier Christmas, let them pay for it from their own multimillion dollar personal fortune! I have a feeling the 54 trees would be reduced real quick if the Obamas had to pay for them by themselves. It's always easier to spend other people's money.

54 trees are a bit "obscene" when you consider how many people are hurting.

The NYers affected by Hurricane Sandy come to mind. They don't have any place to put 1 tree!. :-(

Cracks me up what some people bitch about.

These Christmas trees aren’t for the Obamas. Rather, they’re for the tens of thousands of tourists who line up in the cold to tour the White House during the holidays. Indeed, precisely because of all the tourists running around, this is the part of the White House that the Obamas are least likely to use.

For another, the notion that the best thing one can do during a bad economy is to cut back on spending is remarkably counterproductive. If anything, the Obamas should be laying on more Christmas trees–and so should the rest of those fortunate to have jobs. That’s, after all, how people who sell and transport trees and ornaments put food on their tables. The last thing they need is for people to start cutting back in some bizarre show of solidarity.

Wow! Let me guess - you are a "tolerant" member of the "tolerant" party. You make my point exactly.

Have a good day. Might want to sit down.

I think the Sandy victims would just like a place to lay their heads with a real roof over them, electricity, and the ability to go back to work, without worrying if someone will rob their house.

Doubt they even care about a Christmas tree this year.
