White House petition against Westboro Baptist Church
December 29, 2012 8:55 pmWestboro Baptist Church might have barked up the wrong tree when it decided to try and protest at the funerals of the Sandy Hook tragedy victims. It almost seems like the church’s prime goal is to tick as many people off as they can in the shortest amount of time possible. For this reason, it shouldn’t surprise them that folks are trying to take grassroots action to put a stop to their tasteless tactics. Utilizing the White House ‘We the People’ petitioning program, there has been a push to have WBC labelled as a hate group and even one to have their tax-exemption status revoked. The first has already received a quarter-million signatures -ten times more than is necessary to get a review from the White House. The Huffington Post writes:
The individual push has since received the support of nearly 250,000 signees, making it the most popular single petition ever created through the White House initiative. It recently cruised past a call for federal action on gun control, which along with a number of other petitions on the issue of gun rights, drew a response from President Barack Obama last week.
COMMENT below: Do you think the government should do anything to limit or regulate what the Westboro Baptist Church does, or is this just a poor side-effect of having freedom of speech?
They mess up what being Christians really stands for, not to mention making the Baptist faith look bad, too.
They are definitely a hate group disguised as a church.
As for tax exemptions, I think all churches should have that taken away. Just my opinion though.
They are not religious - the collective actions outweigh the words.
I would not judge any denomination (Baptist) or otherwise, based on the behaviors of this group.
Claiming to be religious, faithful, holy, devout does not mean anything if actions do not correspond with and mirror those claims-
I agree they should be classified as a hate group, then dealt with appropriately.
I agree they should be classified as a hate group. Any group that is against Gay marriage should be considered a hate group. Let's all move on.
