MANHEIM, Pa. (WHTM) -

A 10-year-old Lancaster County girl has died as the result of a bullet that struck her in the head while she was celebrating the New Year at a relative's home in Maryland.

Aaliyah Boyer, of Manheim, died Thursday morning at A.I. DuPont Children's Hospital in Wilmington, where she had been in critical condition since the incident Tuesday night, according to a family spokesman.

Boyer while watching a fireworks display in Elkton, Maryland when she was struck by the stray bullet that apparently had been fired as part of the New Year's celebration.

Police have not determined out who fired the shot.

A vigil for Boyer will be held on the square in Manheim from 6 to 8 p.m. on Saturday.

Neighbors planning the vigil say Boyer was a sweet girl who you always saw running -- and never walking.

Boyer's mother told WPVI-TV in Philadelphia that her home in Delaware has been burglarized since the shooting, and all of the children's Christmas presents were stolen. Boyer lived with her grandmother.

She also told the television station that there have been fake Facebook funds set up to raise money for the family.

She said the correct information would be made public once a memorial account is set up.

 How sad.  :(

Around here people started in with fireworks around 10:30.  :-/  At least, I hope it was fireworks.

There needs to be A LOT more attention to this and PSA announcements by some celebs. Not those anti gun videos made for YouTube by some celebs when they also appear in violent gun movies.   What a bunch of hypocrites.

It really, really baffles me that people shooting in the air do not think their bullet could come down and hit someone.

Have you seen how many kids were killed on New Years in car crashes? Just as heartbreaking.

So sad. Doesn't take a genius to know that when you shoot a bullet up, it comes back down. And states and counties pass laws against it, and it STILL happens almost every year.

unfortunately stupid people with guns kill innocent people.

there should be a test before you buy a gun just like before you drive a car.

Stupid people with cars who passed a test still kill innocent people.

Very sad. People need to realize that those bullets have to come back down somewhere.

What type of stats are you referring to in your statement, " the numbers are cut way down"
