Fox News: Obama Proposed ā€˜Free’ Preschool To Toddlers So They Can Vote For Him ā€˜In The Future’

In his State of the Union address, President Obama made the case for universal early childhood education ā€” an idea that isn’t sitting well with conservatives.

On Friday, Fox Business host Stuart Varney and Fox News host Steve Doocy attacked preschool access as a government handoutintended to extend ā€œliterally, the nanny state.ā€ Varney echoed an argument used by former presidential candidate Mitt Romney that Obama won the election by giving ā€œgiftsā€ to women and minorities. Even though Obama cannot run for office a third time, the host warned the president is using preschool to entice a whole new generation of toddlers to support him when they’re eligible in 15 years:

VARNEY: Look what the president is doing here, it’s a repeat performance of his campaign, which is you raise taxes on the rich and you offer all kinds of free stuff to people who will vote for you in the future. Free preschool education for 4-year-olds, it’s free, here it is. Hand out the goodies.

Watch it:

In fact, preschool substantially reduces the likelihood that a child will later drop out of high school, become a teen parent, or be arrested for a violent crime. Studies have determined universal preschool programs generate roughly $7 in savings per child and increases human capital.

Varney and Doocy are hardly the only conservatives suspicious of preschool. Sen. Rick Santorum (R-PA) has called for ending childhood education programs because theyā€œindoctrinateā€ children to make them dependent on government at an early age.

Other ā€œgiftsā€ Obama has been accused of using to influence voters are Obamacare, his DREAM directive, and partial college loan forgiveness.

I'm not surprised.. They are so hell bent on disagreeing with any and everything he says or every idea he has, even when they are logical.

I think universal preschool is a wonderful idea.. I do not agree with the sentiment that everyone should get as much of an education as "they can afford".

Our country can't afford that -- education shouldn't be a luxury...it's a necessity.

Stupid and misleading post title.  That is not what Varney said.  Did any of you even bother to watch the video?   Obama is trying to once again buy more votes, but not from the kids of today.  I'll spell it out for you....more freebies, and it gets more votes from current and those nearly old enough to vote for any of the dems in any races.

It's already been hashed out on two different posts on CM in the last three days.  Head Start has been a colossal waste of the tax payers money. HHS's own studies have proven any benefits and advantages the kids have compared to the control group are nearly non existent by the end of first grade.  By third grade, they are gone.

Then apparently you missed the part about the pre 3 yr old Head Start program he wants in there too with social workers going to homes and telling people how to get food stamps and phones, etc.  There are already programs for all of that kind of stuff.  More gov't duplication.

Where's the money going to come to pay for this "entitlement"? Our country has been running in the red for almost 5 years..this "prez" can't even pass 1 budget! Not 1 in 4 (almost 5) years..and this is logical?

I think universal preschool is a wonderful idea.. I do not agree with the sentiment that everyone should get as much of an education as "they can afford". While I would agree with education being equal...at least public education...what happens next? Will there be a movement to ban private education?

Our country can't afford that -- education shouldn't be a luxury...it's a necessity. Education should be a requirement..it's become a necessity. Especially college..our country can't afford what it has to pay for NOW..how can it afford another Obama idea? We've only just begun to see the negative impacts of Obummercare. Let's just spend, spend, spend...smh...

It's unfortunate when a news station takes what could be a productive national discussion and turns it into this sort of ridiculous sideshow.
