Insane Spending of the Day: $880,000 Study of New Zealand Snail Sex

The National Science Foundation assuredly has fantastic reasons to fund snail sex, but blowing $880,000 to view mollusk porn is not stimulating the sluggish economy.

CNS News picked up on the NSF grant:

The National Science Foundation awarded a grant for $876,752 to the University of Iowa to study whether there is any benefit to sex among New Zealand mud snails and whether that explains why any organism has sex.

The study, first funded in 2011 and continuing until 2015, will study the New Zealand snails to see if it is better that they reproduce sexually or asexually – the snail can do both – hoping to gain insight on why so many organisms practice sexual reproduction.

Let me give you the average college student’s response: because it feels good? The study has doled out $502,357 thus far to my alma mater The University of Iowa.

Total waste of money.

That said, DH and I watched slugs have sex. It was the most interesting thing I've ever seen.

One slug hung several inches from a ledge with its slime (yes, the slug slime). The other slug moved down the first slug's slime string onto the dangling slug. They twisted around each other. Then the second slug moved back up the slime string, then the first slug went back up. They parted ways.

Amazing, but not $880,000 amazing.

That's not a waste or anything!
