My dad is a Legal Immigrant.  We were talking the other day about how Illegal immigrants don't want to be called Illegal immigrants.  He feels that is insulting to himself, my sister in law and all those that went through the legal process.  Those who paid the fee's, and did exactly what the government asked of them.  If we can't call them Illegal Immigrants what should we call them?  They aren't legal Immigrants...Keep in mind all the people who did it the legal way...

Please keep this post respectful.

I guess I am refering to the recent debate about Illegal Aliens not wanting to be called Illegal.  The AP recently made the decision to stop using the phrase Illegal in it's reporting.  How disrespectful is this to the immigrants like my dad and my sister in law who chose this country and did it the Legal way.

Immigrants who bypassed the immigration process?

I don't know what else they could be called.

I'd say that illegal immigrant is the correct term, and has to be better than illegal alien, which is what they were called when I was coming up. You know, its probably the fact that they didn't do it right, a sense of guilt, that this term just reinforces for them, hence their rejection of the term. Who knows?

Thank you for your post. I admire your dad a lot.

I completely agree with you: people here Illegally are not immigrants.

In our laws, they are called "illegal aliens", (and criminals,) which is why we called them that, until the PC Police decided it was more important not to hurt people's feelings than to enforce the law.

Call them whatever you want to call them. The label doesn't change reality.

I think calling them immigrants at all would be offensive to legal immigrants. Immigrants brings to mind the process and these folks did not follow the process. The very fact they are here is an illegal act. It is ridiculous we call them anything but illegal.

IMO immigrants that have gone thru the proper steps to become American citizens should be called American/Americans.
Those here illegally should retain their illegal alien status.
Political correctness has IMO gotten WAAAY out of hand.

But, it does for a lot of people.

Look how hard the left works to change the meaning of a lot of words.

That is not by accident.
