Radio Insider On Rush Limbaugh And Hate Radio – ‘It’s Over’

By now, many have heard the second largest radio network in the country, Cumulus, is allegedly planning to drop Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity from their stations. It’s been all the buzz since Politico leaked the information in late July, and a lot of people are doing a happy dance in anticipation – especially the boycotting public.

The The Daily Beast recently interviewed several radio industry members to get their take on what’s happening. Here are two insiders, whose views seem to be more aligned with the protest movement, against Limbaugh and hate radio.

Jerry Del Colliano, publisher of the radio-industry tip sheet Inside Music Media made these comments:

“Rush Limbaugh’s contract will never be renewed at that kind of money again—if he gets another contract,” says Del Colliano. “There are no people coming up. Gen X doesn’t care about it. Gen Y absolutely is way beyond it. Even if Rush didn’t open his big mouth [over Fluke], he still would be in trouble because the demographics are so old that you can’t sell them to the advertisers.  It’s over…I think the talk show hosts know it, too.”

Michael Harrison, publisher of Talkers magazine added:

“My personal prediction, based upon what I know of the industry, is that it’s going to happen. But I would never call you or call Politico or write in Talkers that it’s a fait accompli, because it’s not.” Harrison points that Limbaugh and Hannity technically work for the radio conglomerate Clear Channel; their shows are syndicated to Cumulus stations. “Cumulus is basically saying—if in fact it’s true that they’re going to do this—that they don’t want to be in the business of selling that type of controversial political talk,” he says.

These experts forgot to mention the incredible work being done by grassroots anti-Limbaugh groups like  BoycottRushLimbaugh Facebook Group, FlushRush, StopRush and the American public, who have managed get thousands of Limbaugh sponsors to pull advertising from his show, one company at a time. The groups do this by way of directly contacting companies, petitions, twitter bombs, boycotts…  The people are causing this shake-up, and they are doing it with their voices and their greatest weapon – their crazy American dollars which they can place with whomever, and whichever company, they please. Hundreds of thousands of consumers have vowed not to buy from companies that support Limbaugh and hate speech.

And it’s not only sponsors the protestors are going after. There is now ‘talk’ in some groups, of calling a nationwide listening strike for all Cumulus and Clear Channel radio stations – until Rush Limbaugh is gone. The people are getting more impatient by the day, I’d say.

Our public radio network was created to give voice to the American people. It was not created to be used by hate-mongers like Limbaugh, who make millions promoting lies, racism, and sexism and lgbt-hating bigotry. To join in the protest against Rush Limbaugh, here are a few ways:

I'm a conservative and I loathe hate speech.  That includes Rush Limbaugh, Ann Coulter, Sean Hannity, etc.  Hate will do nothing to change anyone.  Ever.  If I never see or hear Rush again, it'll be too soon.

I hate when Americans burn our flag, but if this is what they need to do to express their views, I support it as a form of freedom of speech.

The left does not like this thing called free speech when it does not support their agenda and would like to shut anyone up that does not agree with them.

With all due respect, how can you call yourself a conservative but not support free speech?

Oh, don't get me wrong, I support free speech.  I just don't like hate speech.  People are entitled to say whatever they please; I just don't have to like it.  I would never want our right to free speech to be taken away just because I disagree with what is being said.  I personally can't stand Rush because he's so hateful.  Sure, he has a right to say whatever he wants.  I just can't stand it.

ETA: As much as I despise what the Westboro Baptist "Church" says and does, I support their right to free speech.  We can't take away that right just because we don't like what's being said.  KWIM?

Sigh.  Here's an idea-don't like them ,change the radio station!  Rush has the #1 talk show.  LOL.  he will be on the radio as long as he wants to,hannity and Levin too.  I'll keep listening to them bc we have the same beliefs.

I have never thought they were hateful, but then I do agree with most everything they say.  Maybe that's why?

I enjoy listening to both. I don't agree with about 30% of what they say and I know for a fact that about 25% of they say are out right lies but I still enjoy listening to them and would hate for them to be taken off the air.

This is really old news, and false.

Cumulus didn't renew the contracts because now that they have a media company as well as some radio stations - they didn't used to have both - they have in-house talent they can use, that is cheaper. It's a mundane business decision related to cost, not ideology.

There is another company that is picking up both Limbaugh and Hannity, the top two rated radio shows in the country.

And "Flush Rush" failed. The vast majority of the businesses who quit advertising with Limbaugh came back, because the ads are so lucrative for them.

Oops. It helps to have facts, vs. extreme far left wing screeds.

Critical opinions are not hate - they are critiques. Just like liberal critiques.
