John Stossel: Women‚Äôs insurance should cost more because ‚Äėmaybe they‚Äôre hypochondriacs‚Äô
Libertarian Fox Business host John Stossel argued on Thursday women should be forced to pay more for health insurance because ‚Äúmaybe they‚Äôre hypochondriacs‚ÄĚ and use more services.
During an appearance on Fox & Friends, Stossel asserted to host Steve Doocy that President Barack Obama‚Äôs health care reform law ‚Äújust kills the market‚ÄĚ by mandating that women can no longer be charged more than men for insurance.
‚ÄúThe competition of the market is the only thing that makes things better,‚ÄĚ he explained. ‚ÄúYesterday, President Obama stood in front of a bunch of women in Massachusetts and said, ‚ÄėNo longer will those evil insurance companies be able to charge you women more.‚Äô‚ÄĚ
‚ÄúWomen go to the doctor much more often than men! Maybe they‚Äôre smarter or maybe they‚Äôre hypochondriacs,‚ÄĚ Stossel continued. ‚ÄúThey live longer. Who knows? But if it‚Äôs insurance, you ought to be able to charge people who use the services more, more.‚ÄĚ
‚ÄúBut, John, you‚Äôre not paying attention,‚ÄĚ Doocy said sarcastically. ‚ÄúThis administration, this president wants to make everything fair. It‚Äôs not fair if you pay less than she does‚Ķ And as a number of Republicans have made the argument, why should I pay for ‚ÄĒ I‚Äôm in my 60s, why should I pay for your maternity coverage?‚ÄĚ
‚ÄúOr why should women pay for men‚Äôs Viagra?‚ÄĚ Stossel asked. ‚ÄúThis mandating all this stuff it has to cover just takes away consumer choice.‚ÄĚ
