John Stossel: Women’s insurance should cost more because ‘maybe they’re hypochondriacs’

Thursday, October 31, 2013 9:57 EDT
Fox Business host John Stossel

Libertarian Fox Business host John Stossel argued on Thursday women should be forced to pay more for health insurance because “maybe they’re hypochondriacs” and use more services.

During an appearance on Fox & Friends, Stossel asserted to host Steve Doocy that President Barack Obama’s health care reform law “just kills the market” by mandating that women can no longer be charged more than men for insurance.

“The competition of the market is the only thing that makes things better,” he explained. “Yesterday, President Obama stood in front of a bunch of women in Massachusetts and said, ‘No longer will those evil insurance companies be able to charge you women more.’”

“Women go to the doctor much more often than men! Maybe they’re smarter or maybe they’re hypochondriacs,” Stossel continued. “They live longer. Who knows? But if it’s insurance, you ought to be able to charge people who use the services more, more.”

“But, John, you’re not paying attention,” Doocy said sarcastically. “This administration, this president wants to make everything fair. It’s not fair if you pay less than she does… And as a number of Republicans have made the argument, why should I pay for — I’m in my 60s, why should I pay for your maternity coverage?”

“Or why should women pay for men’s Viagra?” Stossel asked. “This mandating all this stuff it has to cover just takes away consumer choice.”

There are some businesses (imo) that "do extort" products because it's a "have" to have commodity by many in the public.  Utillities is one..even though there may be more than one entity..they can charge what they want and "accordingly"..by what "others" that sell the same product charge.  We can't just run out there and get solar ($$$) and/or water..  There isn't much competition by way of these products and/or they are ran the same.   Gas, Insurance, credit bureaus all have a means to charge, and do whatever EVEN THOUGH monopolies should not exist in this country.  AND they are a huge means of government (intel). even though we think the gov shouldn't  DO that sort of thing..I'm sure it was the go to method before facebook, twitter, google etc..  Smart meters is one example.  Stossel is right about this (in red) as  we are (already) charged taxes which is suppose to pay for programs..and MANY programs we the people disagree with I might add.... Now the gov is expecting people to pay more money by way of health care mandates..which (imo) is being forced on to the people...and to me is a HUGE monopoly..a FORCED monopoly based on lies and untruths.. It's a tax alright..a FORCED tax..that would make Robin Hood's arched enemies blush.. I’m in my 60s, why should I pay for your maternity coverage?”

“Or why should women pay for men’s Viagra?” Stossel asked. “This mandating all this stuff it has to cover just takes away consumer choice.”

At least by Stossel's standards we didnt "have" to BUY insurance..people could opt to make payments, or go to nature paths..etc..etc.  I think Insurance companies are horrible and I think they run the country.as many people "have" to have insurance to which insurance companies make money from but have SO many loopholes to get out of paying a lot of things and/or pay for them only for a while.  The insurance companies are "winning" with this  ACA plan..they "adjusted" accordingly so they could make money..and the gov makes money off it to boot if you (the American) doesn't get insurance so basically (imo) the insurances and the gov are working "hand in hand".. . So..I'm partly agreeing with Stossel and partly disagreeing.  With or without ACA, insurance companies are a HUGE problem..(imo)..

I just spent the better part of the night trick or treating among herd of screaming children so my brain is moving a tad slow. It's stire you ay so he doesnt believe woman should get charged more? It seems like he does believe that.  The satire part must of went right over my head so is there anyway you could explain it or is it something you either get or you dont and i should just read it again tomorrow morning .

Stossel is a libertarian, so his question is real, in the interest of fairness. He's not saying it should be a certain way, he's simply raising the question for discussion: What is really fair?

Of course, he doesn't think women are hypochondriacs. It is a statistical fact: Women use health care a lot more than men, and they live longer. So a good case can be raised that having insurance rates the same for men and women is not fair for men.

That is his point.

Many times we are unfair to some people in order to be able to say we are being fair to others.

So these particular liberal sites took this discussion out of context. As usual.

Hope your Trick or Treating was fun!  :)

So why not charge people based on their medical history or family medical history because it is a statistical fact that they have a better chance of having the same illnesses or charge people based on their race because certain races have a better chance of having issues then others or where they live because enviroment plays a role in future medical issues as well.  Or charge people with a history of addicton more, or the obese since it's also been proved that they also run a higher chance of having issues? So when does it stop? It's not right to only single out woman if this is his idea of fair it should be across the board. Also when it comes to maternity costs....arent men the ones that get woman pregnant, so why wouldnt they help foot the costs far as reproductive stuff goes?

Also the aurgument could be made that  maybe if men paid asmuch as woman that they'd go to the Drs more since they are already paying for it. Maybe then men would live just as long or longer.

 Once again, Stossel is correct.

Please use critical thinking skills.  He was joking.  He, also, stated that women live longer and possibly going to the doctor more often may help them.  Please, think!
