Sixty year-old Garrick Hopkins was showing his brother Carl a property in Barboursville, WV that he had recently purchased and where he planned to build a home when the two men were fatally shot. Police charged his neighbor Rodney Bruce Black with two counts of first degree murder for the killings. Black incorrectly believed that the Hopkins brothers were trespassing on his land.
According to the criminal complaint, Black told detectives that after seeing two men “shaking the door on his tool shed in his backyard” he grabbed his rifle, loaded the gun, and shot both men from his window. Black admits that he did not warn the men or call 911.
The shed that Black claimed the men were attempting to break into was on Garrick Hopkins’ land and belonged to him, according to police.
Inside Black’s home, authorities seized multiple weapons and a stockpile of ammunition. Black is currently being held without bond in the Western Regional Jail and his preliminary hearing is set for February 4.

Eeeeekkkk. IDK.... does WV have castle laws? He thought it was his land but by law it is so even if there are castle laws, he wouldn't be covered right?

IDK, I personally don't think just having people on your property (which he did not) is a just reason to take their life but given the law this case might be alittle rough... IDK.

He should have known when the property was sold that the shed was no longer his. Googling it and reading other articles and the comments seems to indicate that a whole lot of people think this shooting was racially motivated. The two men that were killed were black, the man that shot them is white ... although the cops haven't made any statement that race is being considered as an issue.

The bottom line is the man didn't warn them or speak to them, and was totally in the wrong as far as them being on his property. He's been charged with two counts of murder, and he should be convicted and serve the sentence for those murders.

Our society has become a shoot first, ask questions after society, and we need to change that. This is terrible.

He could have done like my friend and dh did. There were some people snooping around my friend's neighbor'a empty house late at night (as we were leaving). They went over to find out what was going on. All 4 men (friend, dh, and friend's brother) were armed (legally) , but did only to protect themselves. Never unholstered. They just made sure everything was kosher.

The court need the deeds there was a similar case in Calif. Where a man shot his neighbors for trespassing on his land when the deed he had was in error.  Because of a clerical error his boundries were incorrectly drawn.

It is not known if he was storing his things in the shed.
