Why are some stories deemed newsworthy while others that are strikingly similar not?

Okay, so I asked this question in a reply to another post and was told I should make it a post, so here it is.  Why is it that some stories are deemed newsworthy while others go untold and unnoticed...stories that are strikingly similar and deserve to be heard as well????  Any ideas out there??

Because for profit media focuses on making money, not reporting news.

This is bs though right??? Or am I just naive and dumb???  I mean, for example, somebody in my community gets attacked......I want to know about it.  All kinds of crap....ugghhhh.......I cannot enough get my words together right now for how much this frustrates me.  It's like people are just getting told whatever they want us to hear and like we're beeing hoodwinked on some things.   I don't know
