Actor Delivers Impassioned Oscar Acceptance Speech About God and Gratitude: ‘Not of My Hand or of Any Other Human Hand’

Actor Matthew McConaughey surprised Oscar viewers with an impassioned acceptance speech for his best actor win Sunday night - an address during which he thanked God and said that the blessings in his life have come from the Almighty and not from any "human hand."

After thanking his fellow cast and crew, McConaughey, who won for his role as AIDS patient Ron Woodroof in "Dallas Buyers Club," told the audience that he has three things he needs each day: something to look up to, something to look forward to and someone to chase.

It was his comments about who he looks up to, though, that captured the most attention.

"First off, I want to thank God, because that's who I look up to. He has graced my life with opportunities that I know are not of my hand or of any other human hand," McConaughey said. "He has shown me that ... it's a scientific fact that gratitude reciprocates. In the words of the late Charlie Laughton who said, ‘When you've got God you've got a friend - and that friend is you.'"

He also thanked his mother, wife and family. Watch the acceptance speech below:

The actor's mention of God went well beyond the general "thank you" most performers offer up to the Almighty during acceptance speeches, leading to a variety of reactions from the public.

Here's what some people were saying on social media in the wake of McConaughey's speech

When did Matthew McConaughey turn into Joel Osteen? #Oscars

The minimal applause that Matthew McConaughey received for thanking God is disgraceful. Hollywood needs some religion. #Oscars2014

I guess because I am a woman of faith and so are my close associations - I do not find what he said anything spectacular or preachy (the one comment comparing him to Joel Osteen) the fact he is in Hollywood and feels comfortable expressing his faith is a very good thing.  More of the Christians in Hollywood should show the same courage as this actor and others.

Sadly, an actor, singer or anyone in show biz in Hollywood has to be a popular, big name to openly admit he/she is a Christian or Conservative/Republican.

It seems all must cowtow to the uber liberal, global warming, whatever the cause du jour is, Obama loving, atheistic agenda to make it in Hollywood.

I saw his speech, and I think it was a wonderful heartfelt speech. I liked that one far better than the ones people read from typed papers.

IMO, there are many things that come to us, from a higher power, (mine is God) and what's the shame in showing gratitude for that? Should be NONE.

I'm not the "give a shout to God" type, but the silence in the big Hollywood audience was very telling...Also, I guess Jared Leto is glad is single teenaged mom didn't abort him...

Yes, isn't he the arrogant one to think some 'god' loves him so much that he made him famous? lol.

I'd respect him more if he said he got where he is because of his own hard work,  and the kindess of others but whatever...

Trying to get past the irony that so many of the uber Christians in my life won't see the movie because it's about AIDS and has gay people in it.

You're comprehension skills may have been a little on the fritz if that is how you took it.
