MIAMI (AP) — With just weeks left to sign up for health care under the Affordable Care Act, Michelle Obama zeroed in on recruiting the crucial young adult demographic during a visit to a Miami community health center Wednesday.

The first lady congratulated a handful of residents who had just enrolled during an intimate event, asking one woman whether she had gotten her son to enroll.

“Tell him he could get hit by a car. It’s crazy. They don’t think about that kind of stuff,” said Obama, who moments later applauded another mother for signing herself and adult son up for insurance plans. “Did you get his friends?”

“We have our most precious people walking around here at any point time being hit by a car or being struck by an unforeseen illness and they will not be able to get the care they need when it costs so little. … We need people to make sure we reach out to the young people in our lives.”

nsurers are counting on the business of the so-called “young invincibles” to offset the costs of covering older, sicker enrollees. The Obama administration has been hotly courting the crucial 18- to 34-year-old demographic through social media campaigns and celebrity endorsements.

With nearly 300,000 people signed up, Florida has led enrollment efforts among the states relying on the federal exchange. Roughly 23 percent of total enrollees, or 68,310, are young adults.

Allan Zullinger, a full-time law student who rarely went to the doctor, ended up dropping his health insurance for the past two years because he knew he’d never meet his $2,500 deductible. But when he got hit by a car while biking home in December, he knew he needed to find health coverage.

Shortly after his accident, he went online and an hour later bought a plan that costs $40 a month for medical and dental. The federal government kicks in $120 a month in tax credits.

“I’m leaving myself out to dry not having insurance. It doesn’t matter how good I eat, how much I work out, how smart I think I am. I’m not smarter than a car. If something like that happens, I’m in bad shape physically and fiscally,” said Zullinger, who was so pleased with the process that he now helps other students sign up.

“It really gives me peace of mind,” knowing he’s not on the hook for thousands in medical bills if he gets in an accident.

Roughly 4 million nationwide have enrolled in health plans under the Affordable Care Act so far, but that’s still far from the White House’s unofficial goal of having 7 million by the end of March.

The Obama administration ended speculation that the enrollment period might be extended beyond March after many initially struggled to sign up during the website’s bungled rollout last fall. The White House also announced Wednesday a two-year extension for individuals whose policies had been cancelled because they don’t meet requirements of the new health care law.

Wednesday’s event is one of dozens that the White House is planning to entice last-minute consumers into the federal marketplace, reminding folks they can sign up online, over the phone or in-person with trained counselors.

President Obama will host a televised town hall focusing on Latino enrollment Thursday. Vice President Joe Biden promoted the Affordable Care Act in Atlanta on Tuesday, and Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius is making stops in Houston and Phoenix.

In Miami, the first lady, dressed in a black patterned wrap-style dress, spoke to nearly a dozen enrollees and application counselors individually, high-fiving some for getting insurance, asking how long the process took (about 20 minutes for individuals and up to 45 minutes for a family). She encouraged counselors to stay busy and enroll as many people as possible.

“You’re changing lives. You realize that. … Keep it up,” she said, affectionately squeezing counselor Suze Diogene’s shoulder.

Before leaving, the first lady reflected on her time serving on the board of a community health center in Chicago, where she said she saw firsthand how primary care “can make a difference in the life of a community and a family.”

“These places are not easy places to run, but you are doing God’s work.”

Quote:

The test of faithfulness to Jesus is always in how we treat the vulnerable of society. If we are to bear authentic witness to Jesus as the healer, and to God as the giver of life, then we must embrace the value and dignity of all human beings, but especially the vulnerable of our world. In our American society, perhaps there is no greater population that is more vulnerable than those who do not have access to good and affordable health care.
It is time that Christians, and indeed people of all faiths, seriously consider this issue beyond the political battles and number crunching, to see the moral imperative of developing a system that offers to all the basic human right to quality and affordable health care. - See more at:

First Lady To Obamacare Counselors: ‘You Are Doing God’s Work’

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Poll: Record high say Obamacare hurts them
A new poll released Thursday found that an all-time high number of Americans believe Obamacare has hurt them.
According to Gallup, 23 percent of those surveyed said that President Obama's signature domestic achievement had hurt them, the highest such figure since the pollster began asking Americans the question in 2012. It's an increase of 4 percent from recent Gallup polls taken in late 2013 and early 2014.
The latest survey found that 63 percent of respondents said the Affordable Care Act had no impact on them or their families. In comparison, just 10 percent said the law had helped them personally.
The poll was conducted between Feb. 28 and March 2, just before the administration’s announcement that insurers could renew health plans that don’t meet Obamacare standards for an extra two years.
Perceptions of Obamacare, not surprisingly, are largely divided along party lines.
“Republicans are more than five times as likely [39 percent] as Democrats [7 percent] to say the ACA has had a negative impact,” the pollster said. “One in four independents say the law has hurt them or their families.”
Still, twice as many Americans said Obamacare would make their families’ health care situation worse rather than better.
The president earlier Thursday insisted that his administration would not delay the March 31 deadline for Americans to obtain health insurance or pay a fine, saying that the public would eventually rally behind the law.
CBO: Obamacare hurts workers, sickens economy
WASHINGTON—After months of reports on higher premiums and lost coverage, the Congressional Budget Office on Tuesday confirmed what most Americans already knew: Obamacare is hurting workers. In the latest CBO report, non-partisan budget crunchers project the Affordable Care Act will cost the economy the equivalent 2.3 million full-time jobs by 2021 and will continually stifle economic growth, especially after 2016.
The CBO previously estimated the president’s healthcare law would result in 800,000 fewer jobs, but it revised the numbers based on a variety of factors, including employers reducing full-time workers to part-time hours, and people who may choose to remain unemployed to keep government subsidies. For those already in the workforce, the report notes subsidies phase out as income rises, “creating an implicit tax on additional earnings—whereas for other people the act imposes higher taxes on labor income directly.”
Congressional Republicans pounced on the news: “Today’s CBO report confirms the devastating effects that Obamacare is having on jobs and the economy,” said Rep. Diane Black, R-Tenn., a member of the House Ways and Means Committee.
Letter Shows Michelle Obama Backing Partial-Birth Abortion
by Steven Ertelt | Washington, DC | LifeNews.com
First Lady Michelle Obama has come under criticism before for a fundraising letter she wrote for her husband during his 2004 campaign for the U.S. Senate that has her defending partial-birth abortions.
Today, LifeNews is posting a rarely-seen image (right, click here to enlarge) showing the copy of the actual letter, written to Obama financial supporters, which opposes a ban on the gruesome abortion procedure.
In February 2004, Michelle Obama penned a fundraising letter to help her husband Barack raise funds for his Illinois-based Senate seat. The letter contends the federal ban on partial-birth abortions “is clearly unconstitutional” and “a flawed law.”
Though the three-day-long partial-birth abortion procedure involves the partial birth of a baby during the middle trimester of pregnancy and the jamming of scissors into the back of her head to kill her, Obama’s wife describes it as “legitimate” medicine.
“The fact remains, with no provision to protect the heath of the mother, this ban on a legitimate medical procedure is clearly unconstitutional and must be overturned,” Michelle Obama writes in the letter.
She also said the Bush administration should not encourage the abortion practitioners who sued to reverse the ban to drop their lawsuit to make it unconstitutional. The Supreme Court later sided with Bush and Congress in saying the ban is legitimate.
In closing, Obama told prospective donors that they could “count on” Barack to “keep the Bush team from appointing the Supreme Court justice that will vote against Roe v. Wade.”
Like President Obama, the First Lady has been a strong abortion advocate during her time with Barack in the White House, including during a pre-Democratic convention rally this year.
She was in Florida in January for a private lunch reception with supporters of pro-abortion President Barack Obama’s re-election campaign. While there, she met with an activist from the Planned Parenthood abortion business. Before that, she hosted the president of Planned Parenthood’s abortion business at the White House.
