Conservatives, Wake Up: The Republican Party Uses Religion To Manipulate You
While there are many ways to manipulate people, religion seems to be the tool most often used to control large masses of people. After all, isn’t that why we have “organized religion” in the first place? Christianity is a great example of this. Within the United States we have many different denominations of the Christian faith. Yet within each of these variations of Christianity, we often seen drastically different rules from one “Christian” organized religious denomination to another.
What it breaks down to is somewhere along the line some human decided to cherry-pick what they found important within the Bible. They often did this because they craved power and control over others.
It’s why as a Christian I don’t subscribe to any form of organized religious following. Every Christian religion follows the Bible. Every Christian who knows how to read can read the Bible for themselves. So why does any Christian need human-made rules to tell them what to believe? It’s just something that’s never made a whole lot of sense to me.
But I believe a long time ago the Republican party identified that religion was going to be their tool to manipulate tens of millions of Americans into supporting economic policies that don’t benefit them. Because that’s exactly what’s happened.
I can’t count how many times I’ve met someone living on some form of government assistance, poor, without health care – who votes Republican. The same Republican party that continues to fight against expanding health care for people like them. The same Republican party that continues to support economic policies which benefit the rich at the detriment of the poor and middle class. The same Republican party that continues to push for deeper cuts to the very same government programs they rely on to survive.
But hey – they might be poor, without health care, living off government assistance - but at least them gays can’t get married, right?
I’ve mentioned how I’ve met several people in my life who’ve literally said they couldn’t care less if the entire economy collapsed under Republican economic ideology because social issues were what mattered to them.
Basically, the United States could completely implode economically as long as gays couldn’t marry and women were prevented from having abortions.
Oh, and guns. We can’t forget guns. Apparently Jesus would be a huge fan of guns.
But the thing Republicans realized is that politics can be kind of like a magic trick. If they distract their voters with social issues like abortion and gay marriage – they won’t notice the trap doors and strings.
And that’s exactly what they do. They use religion to galvanize people to support their party.
In this country we call ourselves “liberals” or “conservatives” not based on economic, but social policies.
So when people ask the question, “Why do so many people vote against their own interests?” The answer is simple: Religion.
Republicans identified two areas that they knew they could use to manipulate millions: Abortion and gay marriage. They knew if they clung to these two issues, even though their stance on both is completely unconstitutional, millions of people would rally behind them no matter what economic policies they supported.
Not only that, they’ve managed to make being a Republican for many of these people a part of their religion. For most Republicans I meet, they were born to be a Republican. To them, being a Republican is like being a Christian. They really see the Republican party as the “Christian party.”
I can’t count how many times I’ve seen conservatives say that someone can’t be liberal and a Christian. You know, because most liberals are pro-choice and support same-sex marriage.
Because, after all, that’s all that being a Christian is about to these people.
Who cares if liberals support policies that help feed the poor? Who cares if liberals support policies that aim to provide access to health care for all Americans? Who cares if liberals believe in accepting everyone, even those who are different from us? Who cares if liberals build their economic policies based on helping the poor and middle class?
You know, policies that actually tend to lean closer toward the actual teachings of Jesus Christ. The whole help the sick, feed the hungry, help the poor and needy, accept and love your neighbor thing.
None of that matters because liberals want homosexuals to be able to get married and women to have control over their own bodies.
It’s ludicrous – but it works. And the Republican party knows this.
They’ve successfully managed to blend a political party with religion (something I call “Republicanity”) and by doing so they can manipulate tens of millions of people with social issues that don’t even have an impact on their lives.
If a gay couple gets married, or a woman has an abortion, absolutely nothing changes in their lives. Yet they obsess about these issues. All because of religion.
And if you ask them why, they’ll say something like, “It’s against God’s will!” Well, if that’s the case, why don’t we just go ahead and let God take care of it, okay?
I’ll give Republicans this – it’s a brilliant move. They literally have millions of people voting for their party, against their own economic interests, based on social issues that have absolutely no impact on their lives.
I just wish conservative voters would wake up and open their eyes. While they’re focused on the illusion that they can somehow make abortion and gay marriage disappear, they’re being absolutely screwed by the GOP’s economic policies.
