Panama’s President just threw expert shade after Trump humiliated himself

President Trump continued his tradition of making bizarre gaffes around visiting world leaders today, this time in front of Panamanian President Juan Carlos Varela.

After saying “we have many things to discuss,” Trump referenced the Panama Canal, a construction project that ended in 1914.

Begin scene:

[POTUS welcomes Panamanian president]

Trump: “The Panama Canal is doing quite well. I think we did a good job building it…”

Varela quietly mumbles “Yeah, 100 years ago” before Trump continues discussing America/Panama relations with a complimentary vagueness.

“Things are going well in Panama,” Trump said. “The relationship is very strong and we are developing new things to do and, uh,  only getting stronger. And our also friendship with the president is very, very good.”

Trump was correct that the U.S. oversaw the construction of the Panama Canal, but neglected to mention that thousands of workers, most of them West Indian, died during construction largely due to terrible living conditions provided to them by their employers. This omission might be because Trump’s administration has rolled back many Obama-era workplace safety regulations — or because the president, who famously only reads one page intel briefings with plenty of graphs and visual aids, simply doesn’t know.
