I usually just pick one out of the garden. I pick it when the little stalk thingy turns brown.

Plant some!  They thrill the kiddies when they're ready to eat.

They are fun to grow, but I 86'd the garden this year bc of those m'fuckin chickens.

I do the thump test. I also pick the ones that aren't too green.

Are those bastards earning their keep and giving you eggs yet, or what? On a scale of 1 to 10, how annoying are chickens to keep?

I suck at picking watermelons as well. But I did just get a kick ass yellow fleshed one at the farm we go to every other weekend. It was sweet and delicious. I only got a good one because I had someone else pick it for me. I am going to start thumping them from now on.

A 5. No eggs yet, and they're actually really funny. And they eat bugs and shit. Mostly they hang out in their coop, and I let them out for a few hours a day. We feed them scraps, they LOVE spaghetti noodles. It's fun to watch the kids feed them spaghetti. They come up to my porch and watch me through the French door windows. The coop is a pain in the ass, but I clean it every few days and it only takes me about a half an hour.

I'm actually thinking about getting some goats whenever we finally get some land to build on. I have a friend who has gotten into goats and I think I could handle a handful of goats.
