My first turkey

Ok ladies, I am making my first Thanksgiving turkey and I would like any tips you all might have. I plan to brine the turkey first but any brine and or roasting recipes you may have are greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

This is really easy for new turkey cookers, I make my turkey a little different but this is for the ones new to this.  I teach this to family and friends just learning. First clean thing you must clean the bird inside and out pat dry. Make a mixture of the following a tablespoon of each- garlic powder, onion powder, celery powder, black pepper, poultry seasoning, Mrs. dash garlic and herb seasoning, dry chicken broth, and 4 tablespoons of butter. After mixing this all together in a bowl, Lift the skin and start spreading the mix under the skin in the breast area next take the rest of the mix and rub it all over the bird front to back. Place in a turkey bag a let it sit over night in the refrigerator. Next day stuff bird with stuffing mix (follow directions on box) put 2 tablespoons of flour in bag to keep it from busting. Close bag place in oven 375 put on lower rack the bag will expand. Cook till u see the meat thermometer pops up. Don’t over cook or it will be dry. Hope this helps happy thanksgiving

We always use a turkey cooking bag and add carrots, onion & celery to it.

Once people hear about brining a turkey, they want to know how to brine a turkey. We get asked that question so often, we created a video to show how to brine a turkey step by step. Here’s Alison showing you how to brine a turkey. Any fresh or thawed frozen turkey can be brined, as long as it’s not prebasted or kosher. Prebasted turkeys aren’t brined because you don’t want the basting juices to be diluted. You don’t brine kosher turkeys because they are sold already brined.

How to Brine a Turkey

To start, get a nonreactive container that will hold a 14-pound turkey with a bit of room to spare. Then make sure that container will fit in your fridge. For food-safety reasons, DO NOT brine a turkey in the garage.

Then, put 1 quart water, 1 cup sugar, 1 cup salt (kosher or table salt without iodine), 1/2 cup cider vinegar, and 1 Tbsp. coarse ground black pepper in a pot and heat over medium heat. Cook until the sugar and salt dissolve, about 10 minutes.

Pour the brine into your empty brining container and add 2¼ gallons (9 quarts) of cold water.

Take your turkey out of its packaging and remove all of the extra pieces: neck, giblets, etc. Rinse the turkey and drain well. Place the turkey in the brine, cover and refrigerate for 10 to 24 hours.

When you are ready to roast your turkey, remove it from the brine and rinse under cold water. Pat dry with paper towels and continue with your favorite recipe. (One of ours is Brined Sage Turkey with Mushroom Stuffing.)

However, do not add the salt your recipe may suggest. You’ve already salted the turkey. By brining, the salt is infused into the meat, so there will be no need for any extra salt.

If you’re looking for most of the benefits of a brined turkey (flavor and juiciness would be at the top of the list) but either don‘t have room in the fridge or don’t have the time, buy a kosher turkey instead. The process that makes a turkey kosher includes a salt brine. They do the work for you.
