For most people, breakfast, lunch and dinner are not enough to get you through the day. Most of us find ourselves reaching for something during the afternoon, especially. And let's face it, our snack cravings are not always the healthiest. Here's some ideas for healthy substitutions that will satisfy your cravings without empty calories:
If you're craving something....
Try a few olives, some feta cheese crumbled over sliced tomato, edamame sprinkled with sea salt, or kale chips.
A stick of low-fat string cheese, a half-cup serving of fat-free cottage cheese, or apple slices topped with an ounce of sliced cheddar.
Raw vegetables dipped in hummus, air-popped popcorn, or roasted chickpeas.
Sugar-free instant pudding made with skim milk or a square of dark chocolate, the more cacao the better.
Frozen banana chunks, full-fat baby yogurt (the kind that comes in the tiny cups), or peanut butter right off the spoon.
And sometimes, I think if you're having a super-strong craving for a specific thing, indulge in a small portion. It's better than eating a bunch of other stuff trying to get the craving to go away, and being healthy is about making better choices most of the time so you have room for the fun stuff when you want it.
What's your go-to healthy snack?
