What's Ripe Now? This Map Will Tell You

Posted by   + Show Post

This is a fabulous time of year to be a healthy eater. Just about everything good is in season, just got done being in season, or is almost ripe and will be ready in a week or two. Depending on where you are in the country, you can enjoy grapes fresh off the vine, peaches bursting with flavor or corn so fresh and sweet it needs nothing more than a few minutes in boiling water for peak deliciousness (no butter or salt required!).

But it's hard to know exactly what is best right now in your part of the country. This year's whackadoo weather (cool and wet here in the Midwest, hot on the coasts) affects things, of course. It can be hard to know if those fresh veggies at the supermarket are from down the road or across the country, and knowing what should be in season when where you live gives you a good guess as to how local it may or may not be.

Seasonal eating is also good for shopping on a budget. For example, peaches were 99 cents a pound last week at the grocery store near me; now, they're $1.99. The peaches aren't any bigger or better, it's just that peach season in Michigan has passed. Green beans were $2 a pound a week ago; now they are 88 cents. It saves money to eat with the seasons (and even more if you learn to freeze veggies properly so you can enjoy them in winter)!

This map is a good rough guide to what's in season in August. Your state department of agriculture or county extension service might have a more specific guide.  No matter what your preference is, enjoy your summer fruits and vegetables now, because before too long, winter winds will blow and ripe, fresh from the garden produce will be only a memory until next year!

What's your favorite summer fruit or vegetable?
