I don't even buy onions very often because I don't like them.

I peel, run them under cool water, then cut.  Onions usually don't bother me.

I love onions, can't cook without them!  Usually they don't bother me, but if they are particularly toxic, holding a matchstick between clenched teeth helps.  I don't how this works but have found that in a pinch just clenching the teeth as if you were holding something there works too.

 I've tried this before and it didn't work for me. Most of the time I don't have a problem, but when I do, I rinse the onion in cold water. Also not cutting off the root end will help.
