All bodies are different from birth, and beautiful in their own way. We moms know that, but when girls are growing and everything is changing, a lot, and in some awkward ways, it is definitely NOT easy to always feel confident or at ease. One simple, surefire way to continue to support and foster confidence in young women in your life is to help them feel strong, in body and in mind, no matter what age or shape they are. And, thanks to so many highly popular TV series like "The Biggest Loser," we all know now that it IS possible to become healthy and strong no matter what sort of shape we start from. All it takes is some dedication, consistency and effort to achieve both physical and mental strength.
For kids and teens, it is usually pretty easy to find a sport or team activity that they love, if they look for it. Helping them seek out, join and then continue whatever physical activity they might feel passionate about, and that makes them strong, will definitely foster strength of mind and character too. (If they are shy or having trouble finding such opportunities, help them by looking through local newspapers or town websites with them, visiting your community centers, joining a gym with fun teen and kids classes like the local YMCA or whatever you have nearby. If that fails, take them to a sporting goods store and let them try a few things to see what feels fun, like a mountain bike, roller blades, a Frisbee even. You can get in shape and build a team around any activity!)
When your girls feel strong and know they are good or even great at something, and that they can achieve something with their own body, like score goals or jump real high or dance well, they will feel more confident, more at ease, stronger and more capable than if they did not have those skills and that strength. No matter what their age.
Which strengthening sports or activities do you encourage and support in your daughters?
