Help!!! What do you get a 13 year old?

Our oldest son will be 13 ten days after Christmas. We have NO clue what to tell the relatives to get him for Christmas and we have no idea what we're going to get him for his birthday!! My husband is getting tablets for both of them right now at Walmart for Christmas but we can't think of a thing to tell the relatives to get him and we don't know what to get him for his birthday.

The only thing he has mentioned that he wants is an X-Box 360 but that's NOT going to  happen and he knows it. They already have a Wii and we have restrictions on when and how much they're allowed to play with it. We're NOT going to get another video game system.

This is such a tough age. It's not like we can get him a package of Matchbox cars or a Tonka truck. Any ideas?!? He wants to be a nurse or something else in the medical field when he grows up, if that helps at all. He already has a nice bike that he got 2 years ago.

What about an Ipod or Skateboard

Watch him  closely when he is watching TV......if he looks interested in something that is advertised during commercials...then get him that.

13 is a tough age......when they are young they tell you everything they want when the commercials are on and you can jot down the name of the toy

Maybe some gift cards for the tablet to be able to get some books on it to read?

If he is interested in the medical field how about some books about medicinal herbs. He'd be leaning about plants and what they can help with and how they can be used. Find one that has photographs of the actual plants to make it easier to identify them. There may be other books that are medically related and age appropriate that he may enjoy also.

They're both getting tablets for Christmas so an Ipod would be a waste of money since he can listen to music on the tablet.

There isn't anyplace around here he could ride a skateboard. I'm at the point now that I feel like telling him if he doesn't give us some ideas, he's not getting anything.

He likes to read but I'm thinking books about medicinal herbs would be met with a resounding snore.

Kinda thought so but, decided to put it out there anyway....What about seeing if there are any age appropriate book series out there with a charactor who is in the medical field. I use to love the Cherry Ames books when I was a kid. She was a nurse which is what I wanted to be at the time. Or my 10 yr and 14 yr love the Wimpy Kid books and are asking for the newest one for Christmas. My 10 yr(boy) wants tools also, real ones so he can build stuff...I think I have a future builder...he wanted and hammer and saw for his fifth birthday and yes,mom got them!

My 10 year old wants to be a pilot and he is asking for this flight simulator software; that's easy. My oldest son is the one that has me pulling my hair out trying to come up with something. He likes the Rick Riordan books, but he just finished reading the newest one.

That is a tough age. It's all dependent on his tastes, maturity & interests. My son prefers money or gift cards so he can save up for what he really wants.
