Increased Security in North Carolina Schools

Posted by   + Show Post

 Hey, moms ...

Though I live in Maine, I am very interested in the North Carolina area which is why I joined the group.  Over the past few months, my husband and I have been contemplating a move to the Raleigh area.

In light of the recent school tragedy in CT, I am frozen with fear about moving.  You know the saying "the devil you know is better than the devil you don't know?"  ... well, that's how I feel.

How proactive have the schools been in North Carolina about either having or increasing school safety and security since the tragedy.  I would appreciate any feedback.

I'm in Johnston County (near Raleigh) I have 1 in Pre-K 1 in Elem 1 in Middle and One in High... Nothing has changed they did bump up the Police patrols in all the schools After SB happened but its pretty much back to business as usual. However I do know that Most of the schools are now on Electronic Locks and its hard to get from building to building  in the lower grades (the high school doesn't seem to be as locked down) I refuse to allow terror to rule my or my kids life.. As sad as Shady-brook was (and i still break down everything I see or see something about it) I will not live my or my kids lives in fear. I trust that the schools, cops etc will do the best that they can and since i know that Prior to this tragedy they had already bumped security I feel relatively safe that in an emergency the kids will OK.

Most people can not get past the office without an escort, your picture is taken digitally and kept on file. Your ID'd to death and if someone doesn't know you in my 10yrs school you don't get past the office anyways. my youngest pre school you cant get in if you don't know the password to the alarm system and its changed every 6months. IDK for all of North Carolina's fault's (and their are many) school safety isn't one of their faults.

FYI:  Don't buy or rent housing based on where you want your kid to go to school if you're in Wake Co. Nothing is guaranteed!
