A group of Ankeny, Iowa residents gathered at the public library on Monday to begin a drive to collect 6,600 signatures to protest against a recent measure by the city council to support efforts by a groupd called Wild Rose Entertainment which hopes to build a $150 million casino in the Des Moines suburb.
The group knows that the signatures don't have any binding authority with the city council but want to be sure to have their voices of discontent heard.
I can't blame them. Even though some argue that casinos can be an economic benefit, I certainly wouldn't want one in my neighborhood either.
What do you think? Would it bother you to have a casino down the street or do you see the economic benefits as being more important?

i worked at a casino and the one i worked at gave back to the community. They have scholarships for kids and have grants for kids in their county. I know people are anti gambling but where this casino is there is alot of out of state people coming to it.
I'm not a fan of casinos because I think they are a waste of hard-earned money for some people--but if they want to throw it away, that's their choice...only because it does benefit me & my family at some point because of how much casinos, like Prairie Meadows, give back to the community.
That being said--no we do not need a casino in Ankeny because there is already one that we put up with in Altoona...same county...just down the interstate from where they want to put this new one...just about as far away as the one the company proposed to put in Urbandale that was finally shot down for good before it could get very far. I also think it was pretty sneaky to not put out an official notice of it being a topic at a council meeting until exactly 24 hours before the meeting--makes me think they know people will be opposed to it!
I am not sure how I would feel about having one in my town but we live in such a small town. If I lived in a bigger area it wouldn't bother me as much. The economic benefit could/would be nice though
Thats great that they give back to the community like that!
