We may have to move back to the area temporarily and it's been 5 years since I have lived in dsm. What areas are good family areas to live in and which schools are doing well?

Waukee, Southeast Polk, and Ankeny...in my opinion. Waukee has gotten huge, as has Ankeny but SEPolk is still a large school, too.

One of my friend's kids go to an elementary in Johnston and they love it there. I live in a small town outside of Des Moines so I don't have any first hand experience with the schools/living in town. I do know that SE Polk just built a new high school a couple years ago and that thing is huge!!
