Do Nevada Ballparks Benefit Their Communities?

Aces Ballpark in downtown Reno may have added several hundred jobs to the area's economy and provided entertainment for locals. However, in a little over a year, payments will begin on the loan that was used to construct the stadium, according to a Reno Memo article.

It seems like there is usually controversy when it comes to the public subsidizing of sports stadiums. On the one hand, people argue that sports teams and new stadiums can draw tourist dollars to the area, create jobs, and of course provide entertainment to local families. Then there are those who feel that the economic impact is small and that these projects should not be a top priority for city and county governments.

Speaking of minor league baseball in Nevada, there seems to be some question as to the fate of the Las Vegas 51's and their home stadium, Cashman Field, according to an opinion piece in the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

I imagine it would be very difficult to predict the true impact of a sports stadium like Aces Ballpark. How should government officials weigh the costs and benefits? And once the stadium is built, what happens if more money is needed or the loan needs to be refinanced? To be honest, I don't have the answer. What do you think?
