Ferrets

Dh and I went to a pet store today to get small tennis balls for my mom's Boston Terrier and we saw two ferrets. Dh was playing with a white one (not albino) and I told him to get an associate to take it out. For some reason he was just too cute and really wanted to play. Before today I use to tell Dh no way in hell do I want one of those, but now I think I kinda want one....or two. They were so cute!

They looked like they went well together and would be unhappy if they were separated. eW might go back and get both if they are still there.

Anyone have a ferret or had one and know how they are? We have two dogs and a cat and she said they do well with anyone or any animal.

We aready have names picked out: Joey & Chandler (both males) from Friends. One of our all time favorite shows. Share stories or advice if you have any, please!

As a teen, my mom used to have about 11 of them...at once. They were the funnest little things. We never let them out with other animals, so don't know how they did with the others. They are little thiefs. LOL!! If they want it, they take it and hide it. I'm sure you could google some info about them. My mom was more the expert than I am. I just know they are great little critters.

We have been watching videos and reading up on them. The videos are hilarious. Dh had experience with them as a kid, but I just hope our animals do well together. The lady at the pet shop said we could bring our dogs in and see how they do together so we are doing that Tuesday. Thanks!

Well i don't know much about them but i now know that they are great with cats because one of friends used to have three of them and had a house full of cats so to speak and she'd let all the ferrites out at once with the cats and they did just fine together. one of my aunts had some over the years but i didn't learn much from her about them other than the fact that just like any other animal they can become violent at any time. idk much sorry. but good luck...

Thanks! That fits what the lady at the Pet shop said. We still have time to decide. I don't think they are going any where :)

I have 2 ferrets now. Male and female.

My female is deaf. It really depends. Since you have other animals. I really suggest making sure they have a fairly nice cage. With plenty of room to run. Get a small dog playpen to slowly get them use to your animals and your animals use to you.

Also... make sure any small hole is covered. They will dig into anything that has a soft underbelly. If their head can fit their body will.

Ferrets can be litter trained. Though I'd make sure they have a seprate box then the cats. Ask about ferret deafness. my almost white ferret (trouble) turns out she is deaf. When I was told she is just stubborn.

Thanks, I will definitely check on that on Tuesday. The white one was so rambunctious and cute! My mom's dog is deaf so I have some experience with it so I wouldn't mind a deaf ferret. We have a cage in mind that fits up to three ferrets and it is a tri-level that costs around $92. I hope they get along with my dogs, one's a coonhound walker mix, so I hope his instincts don't kick in again. It was hell teaching him not to eat the kitty, lol.

I will definitely check on any holes, I do not want to lose the little guy or have things to fix. Thanks for the help!

If it is the purple/green plastic one. That is a pain in the ass to clean.

Also make sure they have their shots. Don't worry about ferret nail clippers just use toe clippers.

They are fun little pets. I had three of them in the past but neverore than two at a time. Scrappy was our last ferret that we had and he was the best little guy. I had them before starting a family, so when I had my daughter Scrappy became her instant friend. It was a very sad time when he passed away last summer. Not to say that the other two ferrets were missed less. It is just that my 2 1/2 year was so attached to him and it was difficult to make her understand that he wasn't comingback. We decided on no more ferrets, because with the kids it was just to much work. They need a lot of time out of the cage and maintaining their area clean to reduce the oder. If your sensitive to smells this is not the pet for you. Other than that they do make great pets and it is always better to have more than one.
