As with any intervention, an epidural has its benefits and its risks. It is important to assess both to know if this is something you want and ways of handling pain without it in the instance that it does not work or there are other issues during your labor.

And then there are human faults to think of as well. A "high block", a contaminated mixture of drugs, improper placement.
