How do you know when it’s time to get married?

Joanie got married when she was 18.

How could she be sure she was making the right decision and how it would affect her entire life?

I don't think she knew she was making the right decision, and went on feelings.  Marriage can really be hard and I waited until I was much older to get married.  Put thought into it and tried to use my mind and not my heart.

It's hard to explain, we were both dating for 3 yrs, we were both working, doing well and really enjoyed spending our lives together. My DH doesn't do things without lots of thought and I had to wait another year until he proposed. lol When he looked at me, his eyes brightened up.

I think that is such a hard question to answer.  Every couple is different. Age and life experienes have a lot to do with it too.

Love changes with age and experience. Meaning, when I was younger I had more of an infatuation kind of love in a few long term relationships.

As I got older I realized that there is more to a marriage than just love.  I wanted someone who would be a good father, a good role model and a good companion.  Someone who has like thoughts on finances, cheating, religion, etc.

Had I married my long time boyfriend from high school, we would have divorced for sure. I wouldn't have had an amazing career prior to kids and I wouldn't have traveled or moved away from home.

I think you really have to be honest with yourself and your expectations.

I did it wrong the first time. With SO when I picture my life I always see him in it.

I'm still not married. We plan to get married next summer. We both want to be financially stable and able to survive independently in case something happens to one of us.

We also want our entire family, us and our 2 kids, to be a part of the day.

For DH and I we just didn't want to be apart anymore. We had a long distance relationship, and only saw each other every 3 months. We were young and naive, we had no idea what we were getting ourselves into but we've made it work and we are very, very happy!

I know it was time when I finally found the right person who loved me for who I was.

We got married because we both wanted to for rational reasons.
