Step away from the keyboard
When bad news hits, our instinct is to reach out. We are hardwired to connect in some way, to be not alone in a crisis. However, the Internet is forever and usually not the best place for you to record your first response. Words that feel good in the heat of the moment can burn valuable bridges when immortalized on Twitter or Facebook.
Before you turn to the Internet, try to connect with a smaller audience. Pick up the phone or visit a friend, ideally someone who isn’t recording your every reaction and who is capable of letting you freak out for a while.
