Fabulous First Day of School Books

We can snuggle. We can talk. We can (more importantly) listen. But sometimes, Mom and Dad are just not enough to help with those back-to-school fears. It is, at times like this, when I turn to a trusted companion that has helped me through quite a few rough times. Nope, not talking about a mug of delicious coffee or a glass of Malbec or my blankie. I'm talking about a book.

Yup, if your little kid is nervous about the upcoming first days of school, head to the library and check out a great read all about overcoming those jitters. There are tons of them - you have the usual character books that deal with it, everyone from Dora to Curious George, Maisie to Pete the Cat have battled the first day nerves.

What was on my shelf?

-- Splat the Cat: Back to School, Splat! by Rob Scotton

-- First Day Jitters (Miss Hartwell's Class Adventures) by Julie Danneberg

-- Chrysanthemum by Kevin Henkes

-- Have You Filled Your Bucket Today? A Guide to Daily Happiness for Kids by Carol McCloud

-- Is a Worry Worrying You? by Ferida Wolff and Harriet May Savitz

-- The Kissing Hand by Audrey Penn

-- Moody Cow Meditates by Kerry Lee MacLean

-- Westlandia by Paul Fleischman

Some are typical choices specifically about heading back to school, while others are more about good emotional health and tackling rough times not matter what is going on...all of the seemed to really help Kiddo as she enters new school years and other transition times.

What back-to-school books do you have on your bookshelf?

I don't know if they'll do it this year, but all year last year Biggie's teachers had all the kids "filing buckets." There was a board with a little pocket for each student and the kids all wrote each other notes to be a "bucket filler." It was really cute.
I think they do it every year. :)

And also, Wacky Wednesday, because it's fun.

My kids noticed that there are never any books about how chocolate pudding isn't scary, really, and it will be fine...

... interesting observation, I thought.

I've seen them in stores, but my kids aren't old enough for school.

The only thing i remember about the first day of school was being mad that summer was over.
