I do.  We divorced after 23 years of marriage.  I have sole custody of our kids and I get CS and alimony.

I did for the first 3 years after our divorce. I needed it while I got back on my feet after being a SAHM with only a part time job. We mutually agreed though that after 3 years it would end.

I think if you were married over 5 years, or gave up a career to be a SAHM, you should get some alimony for a period of time. Not longer than 4-5 years-which is what it would take to educate yourself and join the workforce.

Anything longer is extortion IMO.

I work in family law and see alimony (spousal support) from time to time.  It comes in various form for various amounts for various periods of time, or permanent.

Generally it is to compensate the wife for the economic losses she suffered directly due to the marriage or being a SAHM.  Often alimony is used for cash transfers for other reasons.
