Improv Game

Kids are natural comedians, and a giggle is never far away. Channel this creative energy into an improv game that a whole troupe of kid-medians can participate in. Many of the best comic minds of our era got their start doing improvisational comedy. Who knows? Maybe you’ve got a budding late-night host in your midst!

What you'll need

  • Ideas - people, places, situations
  • Props (optional)

How to play

  1. The Basics: Explain to the kids that they'll be playing characters. How would they behave? What would they say to each other? The first rule of improv is to always say “yes” to another character’s suggestions. In other words, don’t take the story off-track by refusing to play along.

  2. Choose who will perform in this scene. Then have the audience suggest characters, a location, and a situation. For example: two squirrels stuck at the top of a redwood tree.

  3. Yell "action!" If your actors are a bit shy, give them some lines to start off (i.e., "I can see my house from here!").

  4. You can also provide household items as props. A ball, broom, or hat are good options.

  5. Encourage the audience to participate. They can yell out questions to the characters, or hand out the props.

  6. Make sure everyone has FUN! Wrap-up the scene after a minute or two, and move on to the next participants. You can vote for the funniest act at the end, or declare everyone a comedy star.
